In Wayland, Arline Neff’s home and attached garage were nearly wiped out when Andrea Neff’s trash burning and a kicked over gasoline can ignited flames. The boy escaped serious burns as the interior suffered heavy damage.
About a dozen Negro students walked out during Rep. Adam Clayton Powell's address at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus in New York. Powell said he had not previously faced such rebuff and noted the exit followed an exchange over his support for Lyndon Johnson. He later met with around 50 black students in a private discussion and said they gave him good advice.
In Des Moines the Senate Republicans will caucus on Wednesday Oct 29 at 1 30 p m at Hotel Fort Des Moines to name a new majority floor leader. Sen Robert Rigler of New Hampton is expected to be chosen to replace Sen David Stanley of Muscatine who has resigned to run for Congress. Assisting GOP leaders Elmer Lange Sac City and James Potgeter Steamboat Rock announced the call. Rigler previously served as floor leader in 1963 1964 1965 and 1967.
Washington upi reports 77 year old Speaker John W. McCormack declares he will run again for Speaker despite grand jury‑related allegations and calls for his resignation. He faces a tough race with liberal doubts but says he trusts his friends and is confident of victory if he pursues the post.
About 300 armed men with armored cars and mortars crossed from Syria into Lebanon and seized parts of Tripoli. Guerrilla forces threaten President Helou, accusing his government of cracking down on bases used for strikes on Israel. In Tripoli, fighting left eight dead and 14 wounded. Officials report Lebanese army moves to block advances near Yinta while urgent talks with Kuwait seek mediation.

U.S. units suffered 10 killed and 12 wounded, the heaviest losses since a lull. 47 North Vietnamese soldiers died 30 miles northwest of Saigon in the cratered Moon area after daily B52 raids. Lt. Col. Burton Walrath said the stubborn unit in the 25th Infantry Division fought to stay. Overall, 121 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese were killed while U.S. losses totaled 13 killed and 35 wounded.
