Third day of raids hits Hanoi as air war expands
U S Navy pilots faced swarms of MiGs SAMs and heavy anti aircraft fire while bombing Hanoi power plant on day three of a relentless campaign that damaged North Vietnam s air force. Westmoreland said losses were far less than expected with 22 or 23 MiGs destroyed or damaged and seven American planes and pilots lost. Two Cedar Rapids men convicted in major counterfeiting case
J W Grant and Lee Gearhart, both 37, were found guilty by a federal jury of seven counts related to a $232,910 counterfeit operation. Arrested in Waterloo after more than $200,000 was found in a parked car, the men faced sentencing after a pre sentence investigation. agents called it the state’s largest counterfeiting plot. Gearhart is an insurance salesman. Grant claimed the money was for a news story experiment.

Tax injunction blocks Iowa advertising tax in Davenport
In Davenport Iowa UPI reports Scott County District Judge Nathan Grant granted a temporary injunction halting collection of Iowa’s 3 percent advertising tax. The injunction lasts until the law’s constitutionality is resolved perhaps in December after attorneys agree on a date. Plaintiffs include newspapers broadcast stations advertisers and agencies. The case heard Oct 18 featured three witnesses and six exhibits including an state attorney general option deeming the tax unconstitutional. Witnesses testified that advertising budgets have fallen or shifted to Illinois media due to the tax.
