Waterloo district court jury convicts William K E McNamara 28 of Rowley for driving while intoxicated. The verdict marks the twentieth consecutive drunken driving conviction in the county during the September term of court.
The war department orders more National Guard drills boosting Sioux City unit pay by about 8000 dollars by February 1949. The 350 enlisted men will be paid two dollars weekly for armory drills and seven fifty for an extra week of field training, with commissioned officers' pay rising proportionately.
Robert Murray as administrator of the estate of Cornell college wrestler Robert L Murray sues Charles Zoda alleged owner of the car involved. Murray died two days after his vehicle collided with a truck on March 3. The suit names William Lyman as the other driver in the crash.
Eight year old Marie Mosher daughter of Mr and Mrs William Mosher was knocked down on train tracks while walking home from school. She rose as a North Western passenger train approached and escaped injury. She suffered bruises and cuts from the fall.
Patrolman Charles A. Lindquist was fined $10 for repeated discourtesy to motorists. Assistant Chief Roger C. West announced Lindquist had been reprimanded several times for discourtesy by police officials.
Police say Peter Marsick 19 drove his father’s car at 60 mph on a south side residential street with six others, all Thomas Jefferson High students. Selma Raneaf 17 was thrown 65 feet, suffered a broken back, and is in critical condition. Marsick is held on charges of reckless driving and driving without a license.
Iowa Supreme Court reverses conviction of J. L. Neville of Omaha after finding prosecutor Charles Joy let juror Bertha Evans ride with him during the trial. Neville was convicted of manslaughter for the Sept. 1988 Dexter automobile crash that killed P. A. Andersen of Lynn, Massachusetts. He will be retried.
In Muscatine a one year old girl named Dorothy Lorraine Coss was adopted by her own parents in district court. Dorothy had lived with her Cleveland, Ohio uncle and aunt who adopted her in 1951. She had visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. Louis Coss and preferred not to return to Cleveland. Dorothy is one of seven Coss children. The court action showed that in 1931 her parents believed she would have a better life living with her aunt.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 that Walter Rhodes must be hanged for the murder of his 11 year old wife Mavel. The decision affirmed the death penalty sentence set by Judge James Gaffney and noted Rhodes’ earlier stay was overturned after a jury-qualification dispute. Rhodes, on death row since 1937, killed his wife with a dynamite cap to marry Myrtle Skriver.
Claude Borders of Crawfordsville was arraigned in Justice of the Peace J Kk Bovee on a drunken driving charge and pleaded guilty. He bonded $500 and was sent to district court to face Judge J G Patterson Friday. Borders was later held after a collision with a parked Ford truck driven by Alves Harder of Shoals on road No 218 near Crawfordsville, both vehicles damaged but no injuries reported.
Two Calhoun county supervisors W B Utton Rockwell City and C W Groves Lake City resignations take effect December 1. The moves follow a grand jury report from October that leveled direct charges against the men.
Des Moines October 26. John Mulroney assistant attorney general urged Judge John L Halloran to dismiss a mandamus action in Polk County District Court filed by Frank Pierce executive secretary of the Iowa League of Municipalities. Pierce seeks to force a reconvened re assessment of all state property at true value. The state says the matter is moot since assessments are made and mandamus is improper.
Mulroney argues the proper action is for Pierce to file a writ of certiorari to compel access to the commission's assessment records before the court. The point hinges on obtaining the records for judicial review and transparency in the assessment process.
Mrs. Mary Christina Ford 73 widow, was found dead in a fuel shed near her home after dipping water from a metal rain barrel. Acting Jasper county coroner Dr. Sterling Ritchey said accidental drowning, caused by falling head first while reaching for her false teeth that had dropped into the barrel.
Billy Brown and Ronny Mineer, both 3 and 4, from Panora, explored a painting bus and used a brush and paint to decorate the most expensive automobile in town, drawing attention from local mourners and the funeral coach.

An 8 1/2 pound war refugee dog arrives in Dubuque from Europe. Shepton Noble King, an English sheep dog from the Shepton Kennels in Somerset, England, with 26 first place ribbons, was sent to America to avoid air raid danger. Mrs. A C Lindley was chosen as recipient by the English owner for having purchased dogs from the kennels.
Masons near finishing the new armory building at West Madison Street. East and west walls of the main section to be completed today to allow roof truss installation. Carpenters close to finishing the stable section this week enabling roof placement. Captain Jay Brown optimistic armory ready for Troop F by December 1, with old armory lease ending January 1. Weather has aided progress, walls and floors rapidly completed. Stables saddle room supply rooms indoor range and offices form around a large central riding hall, making it a top National Guard armory in the state.
A pony truss bridge on Muddy creek near Terrill collapsed under no one at the moment. A heavy corn wagon had crossed earlier, and a following car found the structure hanging below the creek bed, leaving a twisted mass of steel about 16 feet down. The public questions the cause as officials inspect the site.

Secretary of State Cordell Hull said Washington has demanded the Russian government return the American freighter City Flint and its cargo to the American crew. He noted strong representations were made in Berlin after a German warship seized the Flint and diverted it to Murmansk. Ambassador Laurence Steinhardt in Moscow is authorized to send officials to Murmansk to verify what is aboard. Hull said the crew would be free to proceed upon return.
An official spokesman said Russia would likely allow the captured Americana freighter City of Flint to depart Murmansk under a German prize crew. The note indicates Moscow's possible permission leaks as the vessel awaits orders.
