The 1865 Presbyterian church-turned city hall in Williamsburg, in use since 1890, has been sold to Hackney and Emmert of Newton. Dismantling has begun as a replacement city hall project is planned to start soon.
Linton Wells, foreign newspaper correspondent and radio broadcaster, opens the University of Iowa 1938-39 lecture series tonight in Iowa City. His topic is Latin America Today and Tomorrow. Wells has spent the last two years touring Central and South America.
An automobile stolen in Waterloo on October 3, 1937, was recovered in St Paul, Minnesota. Robert Amey, driver of the car, waived extradition on theft charges, per St. Paul officials. The vehicle belonged to George Nesfield of Waterloo.
Cedar Rapids Iowa delegates from across the state gathered as the Order of Eastern Star of Iowa opened its sixty-first annual grand chapter with a reception and ball at the consistory. The convention runs through Thursday with meetings at the Shrine temple attended by grand officers and district instructors.
Drake university introduces a new course on marriage as a scientific topic. In the dean of women's office a group of students gathers with Prof Luthe Stalnaker, head of the philosophy department, to discuss the subject.
Chas Underhill of Sioux City learned he was bequeathed $5,000 by the will of his aunt Lucy Weber Jordan of New Rochelle New York. Jordan died five weeks ago. Underhill retired from business a few years ago and said he does not know how he will spend the money.
Grinnell Iowa reports Ralph Gordon Clark 23 a Newbury farmer died from injuries sustained ten days earlier while threshing beans with a combine. His right arm was badly mangled and was amputated in an effort to save his life.
Nino Martini, Metropolitan Opera tenor, will present a concert Wednesday evening at the Memorial Union in Iowa City. Listed by Variety as a top concert draw for 1937-38, he will perform during his busiest season since coming to America and will return to New York at December’s end for his sixth season with the Met.
At Iowa City the University of Iowa football squad forcibly removed Daily Iowan editor John Mooney and sports editor J. Dennis Sullivan from the practice field. Sullivan, author of a critical column, was escorted away by three players and an assistant, amid tension over coverage of Colgate game remarks.
Japanese legions entered Hankow with little resistance marking a second major victory within days. An official Japanese communique announced the occupation. Authorities urged foreign vessels to move from the Hankow area on the Yangtze River while U S gunboats Guam and Lucan remained in Hankow waters.
Unemployed boys aged 17 to 25 may apply at the County Welfare office for certification for work on a National Youth Administration project. Applications are welcome Thursday or Thursday afternoon, October 27, between two and four o clock.
Truck operators from 22 southeastern Iowa counties met at the county courthouse to form a 22 member committee driving a uniform rate plan. The group aims to present a proposed schedule to the state commerce commission after hearings, hoping to end chaotic pricing and help operators profit.
Washington Y M C A board approves advancing the annual fund drive to Thursday Nov 3 to avoid election day. Forty plus volunteers will begin with a breakfast at the Y community room then canvass to secure funds for the coming year. Finance committee leaders include Les Dunlap Richard Stewart and President John Winga with Ward captains Richard Stewart Cloyd Willits Tom Junean and Clarence Logan.
Lyle Talbott a leading man in motion pictures was seriously burned about the head when a fire gutted his Beverly Hills home trapping him and a guest in upstairs rooms. He escaped by leaping twenty feet to the ground in his pajamas as Franklin Parker also an actor leaped from a window and was critically burned. Neighbors raised the alarm as the house was enveloped in flames before firefighters arrived.
R J Schliekelman reports quarterly milk grades based on dairy sanitation, handler health, cattle testing, and bacterial counts. Some dairies need improvements but allowances aid gradual compliance. grades appear on bottle caps and placards, with most cream not yet graded.
A meeting of the Young Republican League of Washington County will be held at the courthouse Thursday at 7 30 PM to establish a permanent organization. A temporary body was formed last week with provisional officers. Open to all county young Republicans.
P G Ahrens aged 76 died at 105 West Jefferson street at 11 30 this morning after a month of declining health and a recent heart attack. Funeral arrangements are pending word from relatives. He was born April 27 1862 near Decatur Illinois married to A Niebuhr February 15 1885. He and his wife moved to Washington County thirty five years ago and later to town. He served on the Washington board of education about ten years ago and was a Methodist church member. He is survived by his wife a son Logan Ahrens three grandchildren two great grandchildren and a half sister Mrs Anna Albers of Atwood Illinois. One son Hugo died twenty six years ago.
In Albuquerque on October 25 four of 73 defendants indicted in a WPA scandal pleaded not guilty in federal court. Another 59 did not plead and received until November to file motions challenging the indictments.
Mrs FE C Turkington of Letts was seen shopping in a local store yesterday, chatting with clerks and examining merchandise.
The annual Red Cross dinner for roll call workers will be held at 6 30 PM Tuesday November 1 at the Presbyterian church across from the Y M C A. An invited speaker from Red Cross headquarters in St Louis will address the gathering. Salem school pupils are making race cards for the event and a Red Cross flag program is underway countywide with plans for a flag in every township and eventually each school.
Washington reports a favorable trade balance with September exports exceeding imports by 78.71 million dollars. For the first nine months of 1928 the favorable balance totals 860.234 million dollars led by agricultural shipments.
Pilings for a temporary bridge on the Milwaukee main line across North Second Avenue begin today. Massman Construction is building a temporary structure to support tracks without interrupting train service. A parallel temporary passing track and a pump house concrete pour progress at the underpass site.
Dewey Woodman aged 40 and Pete Grinder aged 22 are jailed in Page County after authorities seized 643 bottles of liquor they had obtained from state liquor stores since August 27. They likely face bootlegging charges.

Des Moines reports the state board of education defended its Feb coal contracts for the university after Governor Kraschel criticized the bids. Two Iowa firms won 49 000 tons with bids 7 to 17 cents over Illinois rivals, including Oskaloosa Coal and Graham Colony of Monroe County. G. W. Keenan calls Kraschel’s critique illegal and says boards operate under law, not gubernatorial will, as campaign heat rises.
