Overcast conditions persisted in the Washington area as a weekend of intermittent rain concluded. Official gauges reported 1.38 inches of rain by 7 am, with .24 inches Friday, .35 inches Saturday, and .79 inches in the last 24 hours. Farmers, poised to finish harvests, await a return to better weather before colder weather arrives.
UNICEF reported that youths visiting Washington homes Sunday evening collected 829.19 dollars for the charity. Those not contacted may donate at the National Bank of Washington. Bette Turnipseed was general chairman and Phyllis Hazelett co chairman the local effort sponsored by the Council on Religious Affairs.
A U S District Court jury convicted Steven Allen Griffin and Charles D. Lankford for attempted burglary of a night depository box at the National Bank of Washington on Aug 19. Griffin, 25, from Washington, and Lankford, 24, from Rubio, were arrested fleeing the scene. The box was damaged but nothing was taken. Sentencing set for Nov 21. Each faces up to 5000 dollars fine and 20 years in prison.
A light plane carrying four members of the Moller family from Clarion Iowa crashed in a beanfield near Blair Nebraska. All four were killed. The downing occurred Sunday afternoon in foggy conditions and was only reported today. Rodney Moller 40 owner of Eyler Funeral Home and city council candidate, his wife Bonnie 41 their daughter Tracy 16 and son Shannon 12 died. Kim 21 was not aboard.
In Mapleton Minnesota a 17 year old Tim Lindemann used a baseball bat to fend off a bull that was mauling his employer, farmer Robert Moses. The bull gored Moses resulting in a broken pelvis and was shot by deputies. Lindemann carried the bat after his father advised protection after the day before’s incident.
Rain ends this evening in Rain Town with lows in the 40s. Skies clear overnight as Tuesday brings mostly sunny skies and warmer conditions with highs reaching the 60s.
Red Wing Minnesota reports two spills on the Mississippi River. Cleanup crews expect 10 days to two weeks for mop up of 3,600 gallons of No 2 diesel oil from the tug Dan C Burnette owned by Sun Transportation Co. of Boonville Missouri. The tug was rammed by a barge after it went aground, tearing a hole in the fuel compartment.
Iowa coverage describes how President Carter's prepared remarks differed from advance texts and how NBC relayed a figure about 2.3 billion dollars in costs by 1985. Powell warned quotes might be altered and reporters faced tight deadlines as national outlets framed the president as critical of deregulation and the oil and gas industry.
Saturday night the annual convention at the Community Center drew a full house as eleven senior 4-H members were elected to the Washington County Council for the coming year. New council members include Brenda Baker Keota Denise Bohr and Char Gent Wellman Jacque Reed Shelley Stout Washington Shaun Stout Ainsworth Gary Ledger Jeff Murphy and George Pfeifer Washington Todd Meyer Wayland and Lee Farrier Brighton.
Mr and Mrs Spenner were named 4 H Honorary members at the Washington County Convention for their major role in the Farm Progress Show pop concession and long service to 4 H. They helped with setup and teardown, printed materials, chaired operations, and served as 4 H chaperones on trips to Washington D C in 1975 and Pennsylvania in 1976.
A UPI report says Iowa drew about 3.4 billion dollars in federal funds in 1976, led by Social Security and retirement benefits from HEW. The state ranked 31st nationally in total funds and 48th per capita, with key allocations to social services, veterans programs, and DoD contracts. Local governments and state universities shared remaining revenues, including 84 million in revenue-sharing funds.
Congressman Tom Harkin arranged a White House contact via Tim Kraft to persuade President Carter to stay overnight in Iowa. Eight farmers and wives joined a farm discussion near Indianola where set aside land and weather outlook were debated. Carter signaled patience on set asides while noting grain sales interest from Poland. Harkin praised Carter as decent and moral and predicted more voter outreach in coming years.
Iowa Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting in Kalona at 7 30 p m on Thursday October 27 to discuss an abandonment application for discontinuance of rail freight on the Central Iowa Transportation Cooperative Line filed with the ICC. Sen Hubert Humphrey reenters Washington aboard Air Force One after two months of cancer treatment in Minneapolis. President Carter praised him as a great American and he plans a Senate comeback Tuesday as he recovers, saying therapy comes from faith and support and he will never give up.
