He was elected to a three year board term at the annual Des Moines Golf and Country Club meeting and named to the executive officers. Richard H. Wolfe of J.C. Penney Co. in Sioux City is president for the coming year.

Plane crashes near Lamoni airport injures Montana residents
Two Montana residents were injured when a Cessna Skyhawk II crashed in a field near Lamoni Iowa during a thunderstorm Friday night. Deputies said the plane struck terrain about 8 p.m. as the pilot attempted a landing on the unlighted field beside the airport.

Thompson backs new Mississippi bridge linking Keokuk and Hamilton

Senate panel backs bigger Social Security tax hike for employers
The Senate Finance Committee approved larger boosts in payroll taxes for employers than for workers to protect Social Security finances into the next century. A final agreement remains elusive with another meeting planned. the panel noted the system faces a growing deficit and potential exhaustion in the early 1980s. Proposals from Sen. Gaylord Nelson would raise the wage base for employer and employee taxes unevenly, aiming to widen the employer base from 16,500 in 1979 to 19,500 for employers and 50,000 for employees, then to 75,000 for employers and 30,300 for employees by 1985.

President Carter returned to Iowa for the first time since his campaign start to defend his policies and focus on farm issues. He met with Woody Diehl, a Warren County farmer, at Diehl’s ranch house and planned a breakfast with central and southwest Iowa farmers to discuss the drought and agricultural slump. Man must pay for his painting spree in Kalona
Anthony E. Wheeler, 20, of Kalona, Friday was sentenced to jail and ordered to restitution for damages from a Sept. 29 painting spree. District Judge Arthur McGiverin gave 60 days in county jail with 30 suspended, one year probation with the Court Services Department, and reimbursement to victims for damages over $100. The guilty plea covered criminal trespass causing the vandalism. The spree smeared red obscenities on a church, the fire station, and several Kalona businesses. In other cases, Joseph R. Nelson pleaded guilty to a first offense drunk driving and Paul W. Chapek pleaded innocent to a first offense drunk driving. Nelson was fined $300 and license suspended. Chapek waived speedy trial.
