County buys four new sheriff's cars
The Washington County Board of Supervisors accepted bids from Wade & Co. Inc. and Town & Country Plymouth for four 1978 sheriff's cars. They approved 4900 for a Pontiac Catalina four-door and 14700 for three Plymouth Fury sedans. Cars are assigned to deputies Murphy Combs Schmidt Fedler with rotation involving Kalona and Wellman. Courthouse offices close November 11 for Veterans Day.

Runaway car nearly hits stores in city square
Washington police logged four traffic incidents in two hours on late Monday. A 68 year old Nora A Knottnerus of rural Ainsworth backed from a stall with a stuck accelerator, ramming a parked car and a Riverside station wagon, then hitting a light pole and sidewalk, injuring a 9 year old Michael D Arnold and herself slightly. Minor injuries and $3050 damage reported. A pending charge for failing to stop within an assured clear distance.

Charge youth in murders of family
An 18-year-old college freshman, Michael Swihart of Miami University, was charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of his father Donald Swihart 41 his mother Sue 38 and brothers Brian 16 and Russell 9. The bodies were found in the burnt rubble of their Medina County home after a baseball bat assault and arson. Swihart was jailed in Medina pending arraignment scheduled for later today.

Des Moines Narcotics Raid Finds $80,000 Cocaine Cache
Four MANS agents and two officers seized 307 grams of 90 per cent pure cocaine in a northwest Des Moines home. Lt. William Tigue says it was the citys largest haul and among the states biggest. The cache, valued at about $80,000, was found with a Polk County warrant.
