A two day gathering of 50 Iowa National Youth Administration supervisors opened with G A Bingham director of work projects in Iowa presiding. Administrative procedure and office routine were discussed.
Mayor Ralph Eb Slippy accepted a 256165 dollar grant payment as the first installment toward funding a new million dollar sewage disposal plant in Waterloo. The sizable check marks one of the largest ever received by city officials for public works projects.
MORNING SON reports Don Oberman, 26, of Yarmouth, lost his right hand in a mechanical corn picker at Kilmer Knutson farm. Oberman is married with two young children.
Clement Nedved, 19, of Duncan, died at Mason City hospital from a gunshot wound suffered while hunting on his brother’s farm near Garner. Ben Lau, 45, of Klemme, escaped serious injury when struck by a bullet from a .22 rifle fired by Clair Tanner.
Titonka resident Sumner Craven 60 who ran the Titonka telephone exchange for 17 years shot himself through the heart after receiving notice of layoff. Kossuth county officers reported the death by suicide in Titonka.
DES MOINES reports that over 2,600 warning tickets were issued to motorists in September for improper motor vehicle lighting. State Safety Commissioner Karl Fischer announced a monthlong campaign to curb improper lighting with increased vigor.
The trial of James M Huntington former deputy Union county treasurer began over a $2815 shortage found in the county treasurer's office two months ago.
Union Pacific receives 15 new locomotives announced by President W. M. Jeffers. The engines, claimed as the most powerful of their type, will run between Council Bluffs and western points, hauling heavy trains at 90 miles per hour.
Dorothy Coosha Spence, a descendant of Indians on her father’s side, will portray an Indian princess in Simpson College’s homecoming play Hay Fever by Noel Coward. She will also lead the crowd in singing the Scalp song before the football game.
Spirit Lake Emery Bailey 20 of Spencer was killed by a corn picker on Chris Schmidt farm seven miles south of Lake Park. He tried to reach a blocked section before the motor stopped, his clothing drawn into the machine as the engine idled. Schmidt, returning after 15 minutes, found Bailey unconscious and pulled him free. Bailey died from bleeding.

Federal economist at the bureau of Agricultural Economics says a good winter for hog raisers is expected. Demand for hogs should rise despite higher supplies, with exports of hog products likely to increase as European wartime shortages persist. Mrs. Joseph Ott 29, of near Kinross, died at 2 35 am at her parents home six miles southeast of Keota after a stroke Saturday morning. She was visiting her parents, married to Joseph Ott in February 1936, and had lived near Kinross. Funeral at 9 30 am Thursday at St Peter and St Paul Church Clear Creek burial at the church cemetery.
The Bureau of Agricultural Economics warned dairymen not to expect a surge in demand for dairy products from the European war. It noted U S exports of cheese and concentrated milk rose during World War I, but the milk equivalent of exports in 1915 and 1913 remained a small share of total dairy production.
Cedar Rapids and Kernsora reports say two Iowa hunters J L Drakos of Cedar Rapids and Frank Klumpar of Independence and their guide Cecil Grant are feared drowned after an overturned boat was found 75 miles south of here near Nestor Falls. Clothing and three rifles were recovered, suggesting a fatal incident in the Canadian wilderness. Mrs. J L Drakos holds to hope they may have survived in a second boat or turned back.
Mr and Mrs L V Hazen formerly of near Ainsworth are now in an apartment at 315 West Third street Floyd Harvey home They thank friends who helped after their home burned last week and invite visits to their new address.
An obituary notes the passing of a Keota resident. She is survived by her husband and her parents, a sister Mrs. Gladys Buch of Keota, and two brothers Kenneth and Hubert at home.
The Senate agreed to limit debate on the neutrality bill to 45 minutes per senator for the bill and amendments. Leader Barkley announced the agreement after isolationist members discussed the rule in a morning conference. House passage was hoped for late this week with a possible Friday or Saturday disposal and House work to begin Monday. adjournment by Nov 4 was seen as likely.
Rural teachers have formed a choir expected to reach about 18 young women once fully formed. County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill notes strong voices and anticipates good music after a few rehearsals. The next practice is Saturday at 8 30, directed by Miss Margaret Christenson.
Captain K. P. Richter of the infantry reserve from Davenport was in Washington to boost regular army enlistments. A new recruiting station opens in Muscatine at the post office from nine to five daily. Vacancies exist in field artillery at Fort Lewis Washington engineers at Portland Oregon and the signal corps at Fort Des Moines.
Two people were killed and twelve injured, two seriously, when a switch engine backed into a Chicago New York express at Fort Wayne Pennsylvania depot. Victims were Robert Brydon, 4 from Windsor Canada, and Ervin Salzfeld, 46, of Birmingham Michigan. Police said the switch backed into the passenger train during coupling at a switch.
Franklin W. Kinsley about 36 dies suddenly in Sioux City after staying with Washington family. Father and son Franklin and Frank Kinsley operated a sheep business here. The Kinsleys faced a prior damage suit over a Dec. 8 truck collision that was settled during trial.
County ministers gather at the Y M C A next Monday at ten for devotions and a pastors council discussion led by L W Soule. Fred Downing district commander of the American Legion will present the Legion's view at eleven, followed by a world affairs panel and a noon business session.
A morning shower drenched graffiti surfaces in Washington, delivering .20 inch rainfall with hail. The brief storm was the largest fall since the centennial rains over two months ago. Clouds linger with a chance of more rain as temperatures ranged from 45 to 66 degrees.
Justice of the Peace W. Eldridge sentenced Karl Grady to 30 days in the county jail for passing a bad check after he pleaded guilty. Grady had just completed a similar sentence on another bad check charge and the judge noted the continued pattern.
The Iowa Supreme Court upheld the 8 month jail term for William Crandall 19 of Washington on assault with intent to commit great bodily harm. The ruling found no reversible errors though no criminal tendencies were evident in Crandall. The court also reversed Lawrence Albertson's conviction for an offense not in Iowa statutes.
Marie Welch started work yesterday morning as an operator at the Modernistic Beauty Studio. She came from Mt. Pleasant where she previously worked in a beauty salon. her home is in Crawfordsville.
Grady will pay the check amount plus costs totaling 13.65 dollars, and the jail sentence will be remitted.

The City of Flint was captured by the German cruiser Emden after picking up crew from a sunk British ship. The cargo is described as contraband and a prize crew was put aboard, with the ship sent toward Kola bay under controversy. White House says voyage was legal and lawful under U. S. statutes, while international issues are being investigated.
The Saturday event in Washington marked one of four final state contests in Iowa weekend. Winners receive first ratings but do not advance to additional contests this year, unlike district setups.
