About 8 million pounds of biscuits stored in civil defense shelters since the 1960s may be used to stretch drought thinned livestock feed supplies. The hard rations are too stale for humans and might be used for livestock with guidance from the Defense Preparedness Agency.
Washington residents are urged to give to a UNICEF drive Sunday night between 5 30 and 7 p m. Students from fourth to ninth grade will gather at two churches to solicit door to door with adult escorts from local clubs and church groups. If rain delays the event Oct 24 a backup date is set for Oct 31 with church groups assisting at the Presbyterian Home.
Former Iowa liquor commissioner Homer R. Adcock, 67, was found guilty by a federal jury of eight counts including two extortion, three tax evasion, and three fraudulent tax returns related to a three year probe of the Iowa Liquor Control Commission. He faces up to 64 years in prison with fines totaling 65,000.

The Evening Journal launches a candidate series for county offices ahead of the November 2 election. Eleven candidates responded to questionnaires covering schooling, qualifications, county needs, local government roles, courthouse and hospital operations, and goals if elected. Primary county posts include five Republicans and three Democrats with hospital board seats also on the ballot.
Curtis P Mineart 43 of 912 S Ave D and Virginia Shalla a Richmond Democrat face off in the November 2 general election to replace retiring Walter Schroeder after 33 years in the county auditor office. Mineart cites courthouse efficiency and taxpayer value as top goals as data processing upgrades advance the office.
A Roper poll after the William and Mary debate shows Carter leading Ford 40 to 29 percent with 31 percent a draw. Carter attacked Ford on the economy while Ford defended his record and criticized Carter's positions. Both candidates touted policy positions on abortion watergate and leadership as the campaign nears its end.
Republicans say Ford won the third debate citing calmness specificity and confidence while Democrats credit Carter with strengthening his polling lead. Mondale Baker Powell and Dole comment on perceived outcomes with PBS survey showing Carter favored by 40 percent and Ford by 29 percent in a 353 telephone poll.
Allen L Chance of Washington pleaded innocent in Washington County District Court to jail breaking a felony charge and requested a speedy trial. Judge Phillip Collett will set a trial date next week. Chance, 18, allegedly escaped from the county jail Oct 16 while serving a 20 day sentence for assault and battery. He is free on bond on the felony charge. In a separate case, Robert E Cole of Riverside faces three informations for receiving and concealing stolen property tied to items taken from the University of Iowa. Cole is on $1,500 bond and may face additional arrests as the University and authorities cooperate. Bordwell has resisted court appointed counsel for both Chance and Cole. Collett ordered Cole to pay $10 weekly toward the defense fund and is considering Chance’s publicly funded defense application.
Charges of improper passing filed against truck driver Bernard R Boots after his grain truck collided with a Bennett Community School District bus on Iowa 130. Forty one students rode the bus. 23 injured, with 10 held overnight for observation and others treated at St Luke’s in Davenport and Mercy in Davenport. The bus, driven by Rob Bohnsack, was turning into a driveway when the crash occurred.
