In Memphis Tennessee Mrs Thomas Bishop reports her cat’s litter in conflict with the family dog who acts as an expected mother. The two pets spar over possession of the kittens as Tabby the cat tries to keep her brood safe.
Representatives of Capper Publications in cooperation with the American Legion in Washington county begin selling magazine subscriptions to fund hospital equipment for the Legion auxiliary. The drive uses letters signed by nine named women and will not accept donations.
Members of the Chicaqua Izaak Walton league chapter and guests will dine on elk at St. James church basement on Monday October 30. Reservations with Paul Horak, dinner committee chair, are due by Thursday October 26. Dinner price is 1.50 with a special movie Hunting in Alaska and a speaker featured.

George Barr 86 a retired farmer of Wayland died Saturday night at his home after heart trouble. Funeral services will be at Wayland Methodist church Tuesday at 2 PM conducted by Rev Florence Jardine, burial in Wayland cemetery. Zehr funeral home in charge. Born February 6 1864 in Henry county he was the son of David and Margaret Barr. He married Tina Loder and is survived by wife three sons Ray Ottumwa Gilbert Mt Pleasant Clark Milan Illinois and four daughters Mrs Everette Monson Wayland Mrs Ray Baldosier Mt Pleasant Mrs Merle Green Oskaloosa and Mrs Ray Koehler Ainsworth.

Two men were placed in the county jail over the weekend to await hearings on intoxication and issuing bad checks. Carl Ward was arrested Sunday morning by city police and charged with intoxication. Harley Thompson of Keota was jailed on a charge of issuing bad checks.
Two highway mishaps near Washington Sunday caused more than 12 thousand dollars in damage, with no injuries. A transport carrying four new cars driven by Robert Cahill fell asleep, went into a ditch, and rolled over near the junction of highways 92 and 218, totaling seven thousand dollars in damage to the car carrier and vehicles. Nearby, eight and a half miles north of Ainsworth on highway 218, a trailer driven by Eugene Socha lost its hitch, crashed into a ditch, was demolished, and tore loose a guard rail, with the trailer valued at five thousand dollars.
Homemakers of the Washington community are invited to a lighting demonstration titled Better Light for Better Light at the Farm Bureau office near the state theatre on Wednesday October 25 at 1 30. Ruth Foster county extension home economist will show lamps fixtures and bulbs and discuss lighting for comfort health and convenience.

Members of the Farmerettes 4-H club meet tonight at Mrs. Joe Knotek’s home. The Jackson Boys club will hold a Halloween meeting Thursday at 7:30 with Leroy Havel.
United Press report notes Russia’s Prague gathering of satellite states to oppose a German army and push withdrawal of foreign troops. Molotov reappears as Moscow signals a tougher line to unsettle France and West Germany, complicating Western plans for a unified defense against communism.
Washington starts its annual Community Chest campaign with a kickoff dinner for more than 200 workers at the YMCA Community room. The 1951 goal is $25,000, slightly less than last year, with volunteers canvassing door to door through Thursday October 26. The Rotary club donates the dinner for workers at 6:30 p.m.
Five high school students were chosen to play in the all state band from the district selection center in Iowa City. Ten auditioned with selections including John Winga Gus Mast Eva Blattner Linda Brindley and Maxine Crone. Mel Hill served as judge and led the Shenandoah tryouts.
Evangelist Daniel Bulla of Pataskola One will appear in Washington for two weeks from October 25 to November 6. He will speak at the Nazarene church at 7 30 each evening Rev F A Hahn announced. The public is invited to attend these services.
