Wynne Arkansas railroad workers found their dog mascot Smokie waiting with a wagging tail as coal was loaded for the resumption of service after the strike. Smokie had disappeared during the work stoppage and reappeared at the moment trains returned to work.
West German papers report civilian deaths and clashes with Russian troops in the zone. Miners at Johanngeorgenstadt fight police with pit lamps, killing four. Grimma sees night battles and attacks on women. Leipzig raids uncover rifles and ammunition.
A Soo Line crewman was killed as wet leaves slicked the tracks causing a three-train crash near River Forest Illinois. A brakeman Max Nettleton of Schiller Park died when his caboose was hurled 20 feet into the street while two trains failed to gain traction on a grade.
Edward L Lund and Gloria L Keyser of Clinton received a marriage license this morning at the district court clerk R R Noonan's office.
A Social Security Administration official from Burlington will visit Washington Wednesday October 25 from 9 30 to 12 00 am at the Iowa State Employment Office 110 West Main Street to help with filing old age and survivors insurance claims or to issue social security numbers.

Seventy five Washington volunteers run the YMCA board and committees. The Community Chest campaign opens Monday October 23 to fund the YMCA budget, with memberships and gifts filling the rest. The plan offers need-based memberships and highlights past activities such as Halloween parties learning to swim, Camp Arrowhead, basketball, hikes, Holy Week services, and community forums. Marvin Van Metre joins as new staff in charge of boys work.
Harold Stassen waited in Philadelphia for a direct reply from Premier Stalin after rejecting Pravda’s editorial response to his peace proposal. He asserted Russian leaders and people understand his commitment to a just world peace and offered to meet Stalin if he is sincere.
A midget hurricane moving from the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida’s west coast has lost much of its strength, with the weather bureau doubting it reached major storm status. Advisory at 6:50 a.m. said dry air reduced force and coastal winds were not strong, though precautions from Tampa Bay to St. Marks should continue.
New Washington residents are George Turner and his wife from Milford Kansas now living at 1413 East Third Street. He works as a mechanic at the Kaiser Frazer garage while she is employed at the White Front cafe. They have two children Nancy Jo aged three and Rickie sixteen months. Keota pastor Rev P. Shepard a nationally recognized Town and Country leader will speak on Ames radio station WOI November 6 to 11. He will broadcast each morning from 7 10 to 7 30. For 12 years he has led WOI spring planting services and originated the God's Portion program now used by over 5000 churches nationwide.

Edna Aman, a five year old in Marshalltown, receives a $30 bicycle sent by Sgt John A Waibel of the 89th medium tank battalion in Korea after her father bought a broken bike and reported a robbery. Mayor Don Taylor presents the bike at Edna's school, declaring Waibel an honorary citizen.
Paul Allison 38 pleads guilty in district court to his wife's murder in a sudden move. Judge E K Daugherty schedules October 26 to determine murder degree and set sentencing date. Allison held on open murder charge after a manhunt near Albia. funeral for Mrs. Allison held without his attendance.
Members of the CIO United Packinghouse workers union approved a two year contract with John Morrell and Company at a mass meeting in Ottumwa last night. The pact raises wages 11 cents an hour retroactive to August 11, strengthens seniority and expands sick leave with signing set for Monday.
United Nations flying columns advance across North Korea reaching within 85 miles of the Manchurian border on two fronts. American paratroopers and the 1st Cavalry trap 27,000 fleeing Communists near Pyongyang while South Korean units press toward Hamhung. British Commonwealth brigade moves along the Chongchon river as radios report a new North Korean capital near Sinulju.
Leo D Allbaugh of Washington purchases the H and M grocery on the north side of Sigourney’s Square from Harold Luers who served in the army reserves. The Allbaughs will operate as Allbaugh Food Store with Mrs Allbaugh helping.
Paul Benner district fieldman for the Production and Marketing Administration denied last night he urged Linn county PMA committeemen to vote for Albert Loveland for U S Senator. He said he told the group to exercise their right to vote but not endorse any candidate. Senator Bourke Hickenlooper charged Benner violated the Hatch Act by electioneering in the campaign.
