MacArthur Returns to Philippines with Vast Pacific Forces

MacArthur travels to the Philippines as naval and air power mass in the Pacific. Seventh Fleet under Vice Admiral Kinkaid joins Third Fleet led by Admiral Halsey and Task Force 58 under Vice Admiral Mitscher. Osmeña and Corregidor survivors vow they will return.

Thompson widow chosen as Republican candidate in Monona

Mrs. Gerald Thompson widow of the late Monona county auditor was selected Saturday by the Republican central committee to succeed her husband. Democrats did not name a candidate in the June primaries. Services are planned Tuesday over Thompson who died after emergency surgery in a Sioux City hospital.

Virginia Dixon Die in Bloomfield Car Crash

Virginia Dixon aged 16 died from injuries after a car driven by Charles Barnett 18 crashed into a telephone pole and overturned in Bloomfield. Barnett was uninjured. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lester Dixon and survived by three brothers. An inquest was set for today.

Struck by Automobile Fatal for Frank Mulvaney in Council Bluffs

Council Bluffs Frank E. Mulvaney aged 45 died Sunday from injuries after being struck Saturday night by a car driven by Vern Williams. Mulvaney worked for Quaker Baking Co. He is survived by his wife Florence, his parents, and one brother. Mulvaney is the citys fifth traffic fatality this year.

Seven Killed in Sioux City Plane Crash

A B 17 bomber attempting an emergency landing crashed into a fire station at the Sioux City army air base Sunday afternoon. Five army air men and two civilian air base firefighters were killed. Col. Wallace S. Dawson announced the disaster as the one-story frame station burned to the ground. The two firemen were the station’s only occupants. Survivors escaped serious injury, with most crew members protecting the Fortress as the aircraft stalled and collapsed into the station.

Mrs. Hanscom Dies at 73 from Long‑Ago Fall Injuries

Blencoe woman Mrs. Frank Hanscom died Sunday at age 73 from complications after a fall three years earlier when a siren sounded the first war bond drive. She leaves a daughter and a step son. Funeral is set for Tuesday.

Award Service Bar To Mrs Karle Libe

Lee A. Holland of the Washington County Civilian Defense Council announced he presented Mrs Karle Libe with a service bar for 2,000 hours of civilian war work. The award honored her clothing drives for Russians and the war needy, plus extensive Red Cross and defense council voluntary service.

P. J. Moriarty Dies Former Washington Resident

Funeral services for P. J. Moriarty 75 of Des Moines will be held at 10 tomorrow. He died Saturday after a heart illness. A former Washington resident he worked with newspapers in Creston and Des Moines before retirement. Survived by wife two sons two grandchildren one great grandchild a sister in Washington and another in Marshalltown two brothers in Washington and Des Moines. J G Moriarty is deceased.

Bee Line Expands Service to Riverside and Connections

Bee Line announces two daily buses to Riverside starting today with departures from Washington at 6:35 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Return trips from Riverside to Washington depart at 8:35 a.m. and 7:44 p.m. Evening and cross-town shifts adjust schedules for Lowa City and Fort Madison routes, with through connections to Macomb Camp Ellis and Quincy, Ill through Sparrow Transit Lines.

Iowa man among released POWs from Japanese ship

Washington residents heard a radio broadcast naming Lt. John Gillespie of Sigourney among U S prisoners freed on a Philippine island. Later it was learned he was part of a group rescued from a Japanese prison ship and the only Iowa officer in the group.

Washington parents learn from a returning prisoner that Technical Sergeant Harry Fullerton is in excellent health and coping well at Stalag 17B Krems Austria. The fellow airman spoke by phone from Willimette, Illinois, near Chicago, noting shared bomber squadron and a July 26 release from the camp.

Young People Plan Youth Conference

At a Baptist church meeting yesterday county youths drafted plans for the annual county youth conference to be held after Thanksgiving in Washington. A follow up meeting is set for next Sunday at the same church to finalize the Washington venue and invite county ministers to participate.

Mayer Services Set for Tuesday

Funeral services for Howard Tl. Mayer are announced for Tuesday at 2 PM at L. A. Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Milo J. Phillips and Rev. Carl Klein presiding. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery. Mayer died Saturday at 6 45 PM after a stroke at the county hospital. He was born September 30 1870 in Dutel Creek township and lived on the west county home farm before moving to Washington 20 years ago. He and his sister Lena Mayer lived at 116 East Madison Street until her death in 1988. He was a member of St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church at Valley. A west plate glass window at the Iowa Southern Utilities office was shattered Saturday night when a car run out of control swerved onto the sidewalk at the alley intersection. The vehicle, owned by Elvin Gerber, was driven by a woman named Mary Custer.

Memorial Service For Private Harold Wehr F E F

Memorial service was held at St James Church for Private Harold Wehr of Washington killed in action in France. Rev H J Corcoran led high mass and gave a memorial address praising Allied sacrifices and faith, with a firing squad and taps after the service. Legion and VFW members attended with Commander Jay Brewer in charge.
