Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash Kills Ronnie Van Zant
A Convair 240 carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in a Mississippi pine woods near Gillsburg two miles from the Louisiana line. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant died along with five others. 20 aboard were injured, several critically. Surviving members included Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Artimus Pyle, Leon Wilkeson, and Billy Powell. The crash halted a Greenville to Baton Rouge concert flight. rescue teams removed the injured amid knee-deep water, with most of the crew surviving.

Drug suspect turns self in in Iowa drug raid case
A fourth person linked to last week’s rural Richland drug raid surrendered Thursday in Sigourney. Dean M. Lintz, 26, was charged with delivering a controlled substance and conspiracy after being transferred to Washington County. He posted 10 percent of a 10,000 dollar bond and was released. Also jailed were Donald L. Heseltine, Richard Cottrell, and Linda M. Prince. Police described thousands of dollars in contraband seized and said the case hinged on a drug buy by an undercover agent.

Brighton man Daniel Martin reported his 1971 foreign convertible pushed from a cliff at Fern Cliff Park about five miles south of Washington. Deputy Sheriff Cliff Elmore said the total loss occurred between 2 and 4 p.m. while Martin hunted nearby, with little question of vandalism. Authorities have no leads.

Fagen murder trial moved to Jasper County Court
The trial of David Alan Fagen, 20, of Keota, for the June 11, 1976 shooting death of Keota police officer Douglas Bell has been rescheduled to begin November 14 in Jasper County District Court at Newton. Police probe a break in at Jim's Standard Service Station on Madison Street where a west window was broken but nothing was taken.
