Riverside earns dual Iowa Betterment honors in 1977 awards
Riverside Iowa won the Youth Involvement Award in its population division and placed fifth in the Outstanding Achievement contest for towns 721 to 1199. Governor Robert Ray presented $250 for youth involvement and $100 for outstanding achievement to Cheryl Shradel, chair of the Riverside ICE committee, as the banquet marked the seventh ICB program year.

Hijacker hijacks Frontier jet to demand ransom and prisoner release
A Frontier Airlines Boeing 737 with 11 passengers and four crew was hijacked by Thomas Hannan of Grand Island Nebraska and flown from Grand Island to Kansas City and then Atlanta to secure the release of prisoner George Stewart of Mobile Alabama. The hijacker demanded 3 million dollars two parachutes two machine guns and two pistols. Authorities reported the incident as federal law prohibits using military commandos. The plane landed at Hartsfield at 12 02 p.m. EDT and passengers were released in Kansas City. Stewart and Hannan were previously linked to a September bank robbery in Atlanta and an Alabama weapons case.

Thailand military seizes power in bloodless coup
