Mt Pleasant officials approve a year trial of 365 two hour meters in the business district. The plan splits meter revenue 50 50 with the meter company and may be rolled back if not needed. Merchants voice opposition and a public hearing is suggested before final action.

Ida Helscher Dies At Home In Keota

Ida Helscher 77 lifelong Keota resident died at her home Thursday night. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 PM at Bethel Methodist Church with Rev. Hugh Williams in charge. Burial is in Bethel Cemetery. She was born October 26, 1872 in Keokuk county. Survivors include sister Maude Sanders and brothers Edward Holly and Frank Helsecher.

Second Arrest In Iowa City Death

A second arrest linked to the death of Andy Davelis 39 in Iowa City was announced. George Baculis 47 pleaded innocent in justice court to an assault charge and was bound over to the grand jury on 2500 dollars bond after waiving a preliminary hearing. The case involves his brother James Lons 52 who remains charged with murder and free on 25000 dollars bond awaiting grand jury action.

Wayland Rites For Longtime Resident George Netterfield

George Netterfield 79 a long time Wayland resident died Thursday in University hospital Iowa City after ten days of illness. Funeral at Wayland Methodist church Saturday at 2 pm with Rev Florence Jardine officiating. Burial in Wayland cemetery. Burial at Zehr funeral home in Wayland. Pallbearers are Archie Kruffman August Gladsman Max McGuire Will Richard and Paul Imhall. Survived by daughter Mable Netterfield. Wife May Armstrong preceded him in death in 1949.

Hurricane Warnings Up Again in Florida

The U S Weather Bureau urged immediate hurricane precautions for Florida west coast from Cedar Keys to Fort Myers as a 90 mph hurricane nears the coast. Located 300 miles west of Fort Myers, it moves 15 to 20 mph toward the Cedar Keys Fort Myers area, threatening Tampa Bay.

Rev C Raymond Reed Marks 25th Ministry Anniversary

Rev C Raymond Reed pastor of the Washington Methodist church will celebrate 25 years in the ministry this Sunday evening. He preached his first sermon on Sept 27 1925 at Eureka Methodist church six miles south of Washington, while a college sophomore. A 7:30 pm service will be followed by a social hour in the church dining room with the Young Adult Group in charge.

John Griffith 82 Dies at Home in Washington County

John Griffith 82 lifelong Washington county resident died at his home six miles southwest of Washington at 1 30 this morning after a long illness from a broken hip in December 1946. Funeral services conducted by Rev Raymond Reed will be 2 pm Monday October 23 at Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born May 2 1868 and married Barbara Ann Neiswanger in 1891. Surviving are two daughters Dr Henrietta Griffith and Pauline of Washington, five sons Clement and Charles Warren John Edwin Jr and Robert all of Washington, and a brother Charles C Griffith of San Diego California.

Former Chicago Mayor Edward J. Kelly Dies at 74

Edward J. Kelly former Chicago mayor died suddenly outside a physician office. The 74 year old had recovered from a serious illness last May and told a doctor he felt well before collapsing from a heart attack despite oxygen and futile resuscitation efforts.

Des Moines Forecast Clears With Mild Weekend

Weather projection from Des Moines shows generally fair conditions this afternoon tonight and Saturday with highs 65 to 70 today and 60 to 66 Saturday. Tonight's lows near 42 to 52, winds shifting from south-southeast to west-northwest. Outlook calls for little temperature change Sunday and Monday, with normal highs 59 and lows 37 and little precipitation through five days.

Junior College Players Open Season With The Trouble Shooter

The Junior College staged its first season production, The Trouble Shooter, at the high school auditorium last night. Dan Holland and Arlene Knupp led as Mr and Mrs Dan Ferris with Fern Woodyard as their daughter, while Andy Hauter played the mystery writer Ink and Martha Gammon his wife. Blaine Gott portrayed the writer’s son Junior, with Leland Jeffries Mary Swift and Donna Henderson in supporting roles. The Junior College Quartet provided intermission entertainment and Principal Bob Everetts sang between acts. The cast honored director Bernice Wilcke with flowers.

Damage set at $600 In Highway Accident

Two vehicles were damaged in a collision on the Riverside Washington gravel at 1 o clock Thursday afternoon. Total damage was estimated at $600. Edward J. Havel of route two Ainsworth and Charles Wodransek of Washington were the drivers. The crash occurred on a curve five and one half miles north of Washington.

General MacArthur Leads Paratroopers Into Pyongyang

General Douglas MacArthur oversaw a drop of over 4000 U S paratroopers behind enemy lines in Pyongyang as fighting raged in the streets. He described the operation and the war as nearing an end and spent time at Pyongyang airport before departing for another area. Washington firemen later battled a grass fire at 1104 South Iowa Avenue.

Robert Ramsey Killed by Taxicab in Galesburg Ill

United Press reports Robert Ramsey aged 37 of Pennsylvania died after being struck by a taxicab in Galesburg Illinois. The man, believed to have no Washington relatives, previously repaired a stained glass window at St James church where his wife had died and was buried in Pennsylvania.
