Clare Lechner, senior at Washington High School, has been named a 1977 NCTE Achievement Award in Writing by the National Council of Teachers of English. The annual contest begins in January with over 7,000 nominees and about 850 finalists from all states. Clare is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Norman Lechner of Washington.

Senate OKs compromise wage bill to raise minimum to 3.35
The Senate approved a compromise measure to lift the minimum wage to 3.35 dollars an hour by 1981, the largest increase in history. The conference report, praised by labor, passed by voice vote and heads to the House for final passage before adjournment. Bequest Keeps Growing at William Penn College
Oskaloosa Iowa William Penn College received 416000 from the estate of Ralph R Eltse and Ruth Elise of Berkeley California. The gift brings the total from the estate to about 1.5 million. Eltse a 1909 graduate died March 19 1971 and Ruth Elise died April 15 1977.

Monticello voters reject $750000 school bond
In Monticello Iowa voters in the Monticello Community School District withhold approval for a 750000 bond for a high school addition. The measure failed with 845 votes in favor and 1168 against, 41 percent approval versus the required 60 percent. The proposed addition would have added a media center four classrooms and a media center.
