The Columbia finished in 2 39 30 with the Shamrock at 2 44 45 in a vivid race watched by a large crowd. The event sparked excitement as the American Cup Defender led at times and national reforms debated among attendees. Local societies spoke on ordained ministers, church property taxation, tobacco and drink, and the inclusion of God and Christ in the Constitution. The next convention was set for Cleveland in 1900 and the American Cereal Co. announced further mill construction in Cedar Rapids Iowa with ongoing expansion plans.

Spiritualist convention roils over patriotism and Philippine policy

At Chicago on October 20 the National Spiritualists association devolved into a heated three faction clash over expansion imperialism and support for independence. Homer's Close Call Leads to Three Chicago Crooks Ambush

Homer resident Levi Eastwood was accosted by three men on Wabash avenue who lured him with a promised suit and led him to a home at 500 Wabash. Detectives pursued, capturing one suspect, Tan ner' Brown, as the others fled. Eastwood carried drafts for 200 dollars and some cash.

New Veneering Plant Opens In Upper Michigan

Marquette, Oct 20 The upper peninsula hardwoods draw new industry as a factory for veneerings rises. The plant will start early next year with 50 workers and produce mainly birch and maple sheets at about 40,000 feet daily. It will also make wooden butter plates at 400,000 daily. It is the first such mill in northern Michigan with one rival in the state.
