New York report says the Columbia finished ahead of the Shamrock as wind slowed to about five miles per hour and neither yacht finished within the time limit. In Cedar Rapids a farmer, Richard Mackey, was killed when he was thrown from a buggy at Prairie Creek bridge during a runaway.
A Filipino force attacked a railroad patrol near Gulguinto north of Bulacan, wounding two. General Otis rejected offers to surrender or betray Aguinaldo for cash, while consuls published a book arguing no independence promise was made. Wildman’s letters urged harsh treatment of Spaniards and did not promise independence. Bell reports describe cavalry actions near Cabiao with prisoners and rifles captured.
The Illinois Presbyterian church annual synod gathers in Joliet with about three hundred delegates representing state churches. Fred Bonnell, a former county warden, was arrested in Fond du Lac on a charge of illegal fishing. Five gill nets were removed from the lake near his shanty, and about 800 pounds of fish were sold at a local meat market. Portage WisconsinOctober 19 A man believed to be Judge Henry B Weston of Spokane Washington died suddenly at Milwaukee station. He was a portly man about 80 and bore Civil War service as captain of Company A Fourth West Virginia volunteers and later captain of Company TH Nineteenth United States infantry.
The funeral for Captain A. M. Atkinson was held at the family home at the corner of Wabash and Maple streets in Wabash Indiana. A steady rain did not deter mourners from filling the residence and many could not enter. The casket lay surrounded by floral tributes.
The concrete breakwater at Marquette adds 500 feet this season marking a pioneering project on the Great Lakes. It is described as one of the most interesting government works and the first breakwater built with natural cement.

At Green Lake Terrace Beach casino fire raged early October 1. Mia Jencks 20 and S Rydeneks 50 perished as Mrs Jencks tried to rescue her sick husband trapped on the third floor. Fire believed incendiary. doors and windows locked. crowd witnessed her return to the room before the blaze enveloped the building.

Knightstown Indiana October 19 three volunteer firefighters Truman Rhodes Charles Scutter and Fon Davey died when a front wall collapsed during a three story building blaze. The blaze began at 1 50 am destroying the Masonic Temple and other structures and causing property losses exceeding 100000. The fire likely started from a natural gas explosion. A second item from Champaign Illinois notes vandals badly defaced the Johnston fountain in West Side Park with chisels. authorities offer a large reward for suspects.
