Robert Shepherd Jr was elected chairman of the Washington County Central Committee at a meeting in the school administration building. He fills the unexpired term created by Harvey Holden resignation as Holden runs for city council.
City workmen will begin flushing all fire hydrants on Wednesday starting in the west part of town. The procedure moves counter-clockwise from West Third and continues until all hydrants are flushed, with no flushing on Mondays. Superintendent Marvin Glandon notes potential for low pressure and rusty water during the process.
The University of Iowa School of Music presents its annual Band Extravaganza on Wednesday evening October 19 at 8 p.m. in Hancher Auditorium with free admission. Performing groups include the Symphony Band Concert Band and Hawkeye Marching Band. Sue Ashenfelter of Washington will play flute and piccolo in the Concert Band.
William Pickerell, 13, of Ottumwa Iowa confessed Monday that his claim of being shot by a sniper on Saturday while riding his bicycle was invented. He said he lied because he feared the incident after accidentally shooting himself with a family revolver.
Melba Miller age 47 of Davenport was found dead on the Brady Street Tap floor in what police say appears to be a murder tied to a tavern robbery. The victim worked as a night bartender and was discovered by cleanup man Gilbert Tracy. Clothing was ripped and partially removed.
Concorde will begin transatlantic service to New York after two years of court battles and public demonstrations aimed at blocking the jet. Air France says the first Paris departure from Charles de Gaulle is at 11 a.m. local time, with a Kennedy landing at 8:30 a.m. The return departs Kennedy at 10:30 a.m. and reaches Paris at 8 p.m.
West German commandos stormed a hijacked Lufthansa jet in Somalia, killing three of four terrorists and freeing all 86 hostages after a seven minute operation. The rescued hostages arrived in Frankfurt with captain Juergen Schumann dead.
Workmen progress on the United Methodist Church education and administration building in Washington. Wood Construction Inc. serves as general contractor for a brick masonry structure adding 10 000 square feet for Sunday school classrooms offices and a church library. The project includes second floor access from the main building and space for youth activities.
Cal Community at Latimer leads Iowa as the first high school district to approve a surtax under the school foundation program. The $67 per pupil enrichment funds may be used for educational research curriculum maintenance development or innovative programs and must stay within five percent of state cost per pupil. The five year program requires voter renewal to continue. Additional districts including Merservey-Thornton Lincoln Central Stratford Klemme Woden Crystal Lake Dumont Lohrville Kanawha Steamboat Rock may join by February 15 as this surtax trend expands among smaller districts.
Mrs Lela Garton leads a local UNICEF drive with Group Fellowship at the Lutheran church then visits cottages at United Presbyterian home and Evensong. Fourth to sixth graders meet at United Presbyterian east entrance and junior high at First Baptist with Beta Sigma Phi Optimists and A M Kiwanis drivers.
Washington City Council plans a special session on Oct 31 to review a $900,000 storm sewer system for the northeast area and discuss a 12 inch water main extension in the west. Public works officials report survey crews are mapping the proposed line as frost concerns loom for 1977 construction.
Beverly Griggs chairs a Band Boosters project seeking 40 more women and girls to sew outfits for dolls to be auctioned in December. Dolls, loaned free by National Bank of Washington, can be picked up at banking hours. Each doll will be dressed and returned for display. proceeds fund uniforms.
