Threshers Fund Grant Supports Preservation Plan
The Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Association in Mount Pleasant Iowa received a 9872 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to study long range planning for its museums and exhibits. Officials said the money will support interpretation of artifacts and contract consultants to aid program development. the association founded in 1950 draws more than 270000 visitors yearly.

Rookie cop helps save farmer from mobile home fire
In Corning Iowa a 23 year old rookie patrolman on his first solo night duty rescued 56 year old farmer Bill Quinn from a burning mobile home. Nolan kicked in doors and broke windows then performed chest compressions to restart Quinn's breathing.

Fire contains at Hubinger's grain complex in Iowa
Firemen contained a blaze at the Hubinger's grain processing complex in Keokuk Iowa early today but heavy damage hit a boiler room and nearby facilities. Officials say spontaneous combustion started about midnight when oxygen met coal in a hopper above two boilers and flames spread along a conveyor belt to the wooden roof.

Only man to live on chimpanzee heart dies in Cape Town
Benjamin Fortes, 59, who received the first chimpanzee heart transplant operation at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, died after living 82 hours on the animal heart attached next to his own. The hospital gave no immediate reason for the death.

Des Moines reports state treasury surplus fell from a peak to an estimated 21.3 million by June 30, 1979, as receipts grow slower yet the economy remains healthy. Population boom among corn borers in Iowa
Iowa State University extension entomologist Harold Stockdale reports a sharp rise in the European corn borer in 1977.
