The Washington Education Association and district schools announced a district wide Education Week from Oct 21 to Oct 29. Open houses will showcase local school programs with events at Washington High Stewart Brighton Junior High Lincoln Oct 29. WEA and mayor pro tem John S. Walker plan a formal proclamation and displays in schools and local businesses. Peter Weller and Yvonne Shafer will speak on KCI during Education Week.

In Cedar Falls Iowa the state Board of Regents upheld its 3 million dollar request for student aid for 1975-77 despite appeals from the three state universities. The University of Iowa UNI and Iowa State sought an extra 1.1 million but the board chose to persuade lawmakers to fund the original amount, saying the chance to add more is past.

ISEA head urges bigger Iowa school aid growth plan

Washington Fire Crews Battle Two Thursday Night Blazes
Firefighters answered two calls on Thursday night. At 7:16 p.m. a garage at Lyle Moon's home, 420 East Madison, burned badly before the fire was extinguished. The second call at 12:20 a.m. reported a car owned by Burt Wells on fire at 400 West Third Street. George Nowlin of Keystone was sentenced to life in prison for first degree murder in Cedar Rapids. Michael Servey, 18, of Cedar Rapids, was the victim. An International Herald Tribune ad touted a 1932 King Faisal Packard for sale at $100,000 with bulletproof features.

Stan Freeman, a versatile pop pianist, will open the Washington Concert Association season at the high school auditorium at 8 p.m. Tuesday Oct 22. He has performed with major symphonies and appeared on TV. Freeman is a Columbia Artists recording artist. The program blends ragtime Gershwin theater and film music with contemporary piano and modern pop. Memberships for newcomers will be accepted and started at the concert, with arrivals encouraged a little early.
