The 1971 Community Chest drive began September 27 marking its 24th year here with 175 volunteers soliciting citywide donations. The goal is to unify giving to 13 needy organizations, budget $36,015, and mirror growth since 1947 when the drive started in City Hall.
Look Magazine ends with the final issue this week and closes its Des Moines facilities next year. About 800 local employees are being phased out, with Time Inc purchasing five Look buildings for 2.9 million dollars. The closure affects local suppliers and travel, including United Airlines, with postal revenue and mailing costs also taking a hit.
Daphne Hellman Trio opened the Washington Concert Association season at the high school. Hellman demonstrated harp capacities from Bach to Boogie Woogie and invited the audience on stage. Edward Berg on guitar and Jack Lesberg on bass complemented solos, duets, and trios, with Lesberg’s bass standout in a Boogie Woogie number. The program mixed classics with jazz and Beatle medleys, delighting a diverse audience including many youths. The performance was praised as a model concert to boost future memberships.
