Dick Ross announced plans to build a cement block car wash one half block south of Ross Garage on South Marion Avenue. The facility will include automatic and do it yourself equipment and is expected to open by the first of the year.
Des Moines UPI reports Iowa Rep Gene Kennedy proposes legalizing pari mutuel betting to generate funds for private and parochial schools. He suggests a study on aid methods, a state board to run programs, and cites Pennsylvania as a model. Grassley rejects the study.
State Senator David Stanley of Muscatine urged quick action to finish the revised student loan plan. He told a Southeast Iowa teachers workshop that Congress stalled the program for three months, forcing some students to drop out while the plan nears final approval. He called for longer hours, clear priorities, and opening secret committee meetings to the public.
Two allied ambushes and an attack by U S helicopter gunships killed 46 Communist soldiers. B52 raids covered areas from 29 miles east of Saigon to 246 miles northeast. Eight towns and allied camps were struck by rockets or mortars, mainly near Mo Duc Village in the northern war zone. No American casualties reported.
Washington reports the government will ban cyclamate artificial sweetener from general foods and beverages with a Jan 1 beverage ban and Feb 1 general-use foods halt. HEW cites rat cancer links and NAS panel support, though no human cancer evidence exists. FDA had proposed daily intake limits.
United Press International reports considerable cloudiness tonight becoming partly cloudy to cloudy Sunday with occasional light rain or drizzle. Chance of showers in the south Sunday. Warmer tonight across the state with lows from 35 to 40 in the north and in the 40s in the south.
State Superintendent Paul Johnston urged a planned approach to future consolidation at a legislative hearing. He warned against hit and miss tactics and proposed a special commission to supervise reorganizations. Lawmakers debated standards for small schools and whether to compel consolidation or let it occur naturally.
President Nixon says curbing inflation will be painful and unpopular and calls on government business labor and consumers to join his anti inflation drive. He cites a 6 percent annual rise through August and urges restraint in prices wages and spending to slow the cost of living.
San Francisco authorities feared the Zodiac killer might target school buses after a threat letter boasting of slayings. Police rode shotgun on buses in Napa County and Sausalito while drivers were drilled to keep moving with lights and horns to summon help.
