Washington's City Plan and Zoning Commission debated civil defense on a city basis and studying repurposing existing properties as protective shelters. A municipal shelter proposal was considered, with further study planned and input invited from residents through Commission members.
Washington area Chest funds support Hawkeye Area Council Boy Scouts serving nearly 200 local boys in six counties. Dr J F Mallory notes services include training, camping programs, leadership courses, and unit assistance. Local units are sponsored by Saint James Catholic Church First Methodist Church and Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church with a Cub Pack by Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A group of Washington school administrators met with the Washington Ministerial Association to explore mutual interests. They discussed homework time, Wednesday night activity schedules, and churches youth ministry keeping pace with youth. Attending administrators included Elsie Glassburner Paul Miller Kelly Schlapkohl Edward Hutchcroft Jesse Linch and John Phieger. Ministers present were S Ray Blair Ralph Wedeking George Kerr Richard Peterson Vernon F gin and YMCA secretary Bol Gillesby.
Mary T Peiffer 85 of Harper died today at 3 10 AM in Keokuk County Hospital Sigourney after a two week stay. She was born Oct 16 1876 in Clear Creek Township daughter of Nicholas and Anna Buch Peiffer and longtime housekeeper for her brother the late Msgr N J Peiffer. She was a member of St Elizabeths Catholic Church Harper and the last of 12 children. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Des Moines and other Iowa cities will gain about 5.3 million dollars more for streets starting in 1962. The Iowa Good Roads Association cites a new allocation of road use tax funds raising city shares and imposing three year plans for larger towns and single year plans for smaller ones.
The White House asked Russia to cancel its planned megaton nuclear test due to the mass radioactive fallout it would unleash. President Salinger’s press statement urged the Soviet Union not to proceed, saying such an explosion serves no legitimate purpose and would worsen fallout already released in recent weeks. The U.S. noted it has tech for 50 to 100 megaton bombs but these weapons are not essential to military needs.
The YMCA announces a Final Buddy Day for Saturday October 28 as part of the Astronaut Launch membership contest. A noon hamburger and bean feed will accompany a special swim session open to current members who bring a new member. All YMCA activities will be free for new and existing members.
The Shorter AME Church at 517 South Ave C invites the public to an afternoon service of traditional spirituals and hymns this Sunday October 22 at 3 oclock. Rev Fred Penny, pastor, notes this is the church centennial year and encourages all interested persons to attend.
The Iowa State Tax Commission proposes a 10 percent rise in assessment values for urban and industrial property in Washington city and Washington Township as part of a state wide survey. Some counties include rural properties in revaluations and several counties call for county wide reassessments.
Two Brighton coeds Faye Sobaski and Carol Krajnovich are among six candidates for Parsons College 1961 Homecoming Queen in Fairfield. The group includes one from Chicago and one from Burlington plus two from Fairfield and two from Brighton. Voting by students Wednesday will determine the winner with homecoming set for Saturday October 28.
Ames Iowa Columbus Junction area led Iowa highway commission residencies with a perfect safety record for the year ending June 1961. Drivers reported no accidents in Columbus Junction after driving 314 975 miles. Four other residencies also posted no reportable accidents and 34 counties earned no accident certificates including Washington County.
The Toastmasters Club announces a dinner meeting at Captain's Table this Wednesday, one day earlier than usual, replacing the normal meeting slot.
More than 3 000 U S troops opened a three day war game in West Berlin to test defenses and train for attack and defense. Combat groups represented Communist aggressors and Western defenders as infantry tanks artillery and helicopters moved through Gruenwald Forest. The exercise used blank ammunition and explosives, with caution urged by authorities in the woods.
A junior high dance for boys and girls will be held in the YMCA community room this Saturday night starting at 7 30. Admission is 45 cents for non members and 10 cents for members. Dean Garrett will play records and serve as master of ceremonies.
Davisson store marks its fourth anniversary under John and Mrs Davisson ownership. The shop, opened after buying from Mrs Livingstone in October 1957, specializes in infants and children wear gifts and toys. Mrs Florence Wolfe helps with clerking. Two cars collided about one mile northwest of Washington at 9 30 this morning. Mrs Cloyee Dill of Keota turned left from highway 1 92 onto the county road. Mrs Joseph Sheppart of Cedar Rapids struck from behind. Damage estimated at 200 and 400 with minor lip cut to Sheppart. no serious injuries.
Funeral services for Mr and Mrs Amos Weaver of Kinross will be held at 2 pm Thursday at the Liberty Mennonite Church near South English. Burial is set in Brethren Cemetery. The bodies are at Powell Funeral Home in South English and will be moved to the church at 12 30 pm Thursday with friends allowed to call until the service time.
Khrushchev declared at the 22nd Soviet congress that by 1980 the Soviet Union will be the world's leading industrial power with the highest living standard while capitalism in the United States declines. He outlined a 20 year plan to shift to a pure Communist state, arguing peace is essential and predicting imperialism's downfall. He criticized Western powers and tied the Western camp's problems to its capitalist system.
A massive explosion at Helene Curtis cosmetic plant on Chicago's Northwest Side sprayed glass and hydrochloric acid fumes over a 20 block area. More than 140 people were injured across area hospitals, with two missing initially. Firefighters wore gas masks as residents evacuated and nearby Zenith plant also sustained heavy damage.
Volunteers begin work on the Washington Community Chest drive in business and special gifts divisions. Residential campaign starts next Monday. Special gifts callers include Paul V. Shearer and a list of named volunteers. Business district teams operate under Robert Bates with many named workers assisting.
Izaak Walton League families in Chicagua will gather at the clubhouse Monday at 6 30 p m for a pot supper. Merl Kempf of Atkins will present conservation films about ducks and dogs and Carl Greiner may show additional films.
Friday only no public school classes due to teachers convention in Des Moines. YMCA offers a youth program with gym open 9 to 11 for grade school, 11:15 to 12 for grade school swim, junior high gym 11:15 to 12, junior high open gym 1 to 2, senior citizens meeting 2 to 3, high school open gym 3 to 4, open swim 1:30 to 2:30, and open gym for high and junior high 7 to 9.
The West Chester PTA will hold its second meeting Monday Oct 23 at 7 pm. Mrs. William Dusenbery elementary coordinator will explain the testing program in elementary grades and present slides of the Mid Prairie outdoor education program from Lake Darling State Park last week.
