German Shepherd Fights Bull to Save Farmer Near Elkader
Marvin Henning, 59, was trampled by a Holstein bull while leading it to water on his farm northeast of Elkader. His 10-year-old German Shepherd attacked the bull, allowing Henning to escape. Both Henning and his wife were knocked down again when the bull charged the couple. Henning suffered a broken leg and internal injuries. Mrs. Henning, shocked but unharmed.

Thompson Dies at 53 in Marion After Illness
Lester J. Thompson 53 of rural Marion died suddenly Monday evening at his home. A banker turned farm loan manager, he later served as secretary of Brown Township Mutual Insurance Association since 1951. He is survived by his widow Alice Bailey Thompson a daughter and two grandchildren, plus three brothers and a sister all of Washington. Funeral services Wednesday at Jordan's Grove Baptist Church near Central City with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery Cedar Rapids. Body at Turner Funeral Chapel Cedar Rapids until 9 am Wednesday.
