Mrs. Chester Romick, 30, died in Jefferson county hospital after a cabin fire at Fairfield cabin camp. Her daughters Verna, 3, and Eva, 9, perished. neighbor Mrs. H R Ramesberger was severely burned. The blaze Saturday was blamed on a faulty oil stove.
Burlington plans dedication ceremonies for its enlarged municipal airport as renovations near completion. Oliver R. Reiley of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce says a dedicatory banquet will feature L. W. Pogue of Washington, D. C. as principal speaker. The project adds two large runways and other features at an approximate cost of one million dollars.
Centerville a 69 year old truck driver Frank Bailey was killed by a Burlington train on a curve mile west of Centerville Saturday afternoon. Bailey a deaf mute was walking in the middle of the track in the train’s path. He lived with cousin Charlie Bailey of Cincinnati. Surviving are a sister and brother.
Edwin A. Messal and Louis R. Dick, both 18 and from Mountain Lake Minnesota, were arrested in Marshalltown Iowa Saturday night for stealing a car in Knoxville that afternoon. Knoxville police brought them back Sunday and they were bound over to the grand jury under $2000 bail each.
Newton police report house on Erwin Anspach residence entered weeks earlier after a door key went missing. On Sunday while the family attended church the burglar used the key and the home was ransacked with $5 missing.
Des Moines Iowa selective service official Capt Frank Miles accused Upton Close radio commentator of giving unconscious aid to the enemy by spreading disunity. Miles spoke at a Des Moines public forum before about 400 members of the Lawa Retail Grocers and Meat Dealers association at Hotel Fort. Argentina's oil wells supply most of the nation's needs in gasoline and byproducts with about half of its fuel oil needs met.
Washington residents are urged to register for War Ration Book Four at the high school this Wednesday through Saturday October 20 23. Bring Book Three and all family books. Registration follows an alphabetical schedule by last name with hours from 1 to 9 PM weekdays and 9 AM to 9 PM Saturday, plus volunteer helpers and teachers on site.
The National Association of Manufacturers denounces the administration plan for a 10.5 billion dollar tax increase. NAM officials claim current laws will yield 44.5 billion to the treasury next year, far above treasury estimates. J Cheever Cowdin notes inflation exists but expects the stabilization program to manage it.
Birmingham story notes fewer than 2,500 of Alabama's 22,000 union coal diggers answered War Labor Board and union calls to end the strike. Officials in Washington report 86 to 90 percent back at work and mines reopened in Tennessee Coal and Iron and half of Republic Steel. A Ninonka resident helped with a 17,000 pound scrap drive.
British troops launched the first allied offensive against Burma by attacking Japanese forces at Maungdaw 60 miles north of Akyab. A New Delhi communique said the assault began Saturday night under aerial patrols with mortar fire in a successful foray. In the Pacific, MacArthur air forces seized the New Guinea coastal sector, inflicting 104 to 147 enemy aircraft losses.
Mayor R L Lytle announced the appointment of S W Kaster to the police force on the right shift replacing Carl Hanche r promoted to police chief after Chief George Baker resigned. Kaster begins tonight. A vacancy remains due to Ernest Salladay’s resignation.
The Kansas City stock yards had a world record run of 64,800 cattle and calves. Most of the cattle, about 90 percent, were stockers and feeders headed to reconsignment for fattening. A killing frost drove the influx from ranges, breaking the prior record of 63,779 head set nearly 20 years ago.
New Delhi reports 120000 Calcutta residents near death from starvation. An official Bengal death toll last week reached 9000. The plan imposes statutory price controls on key grains, rationing in urban areas, and shifts deficit balancing to provinces. Calcutta deaths exceed 1000 weekly.
The Washington public schools resume after a teachers institute with a hot lunch program in three buildings. Meals without milk will be served initially due to milk shortages, with milk to follow. About 175-200 high school and junior high students and roughly 100 at each intermediate school are expected to participate.
Lt. Gov. Robert D. Blue addressed Washington county teachers at Washington High School urging vigilance to defend freedom. He warned the national debt may reach 300 billions as the price of liberty and urged living freedom daily with equal opportunity and responsibility.

A U S powerful task force sails the Pacific to lure Japan into a test of strength. Since last January a Japanese fleet assembled at Truk but avoided battle after defeats near the Solomons. American forces have attacked Japanese bases in the north and central Pacific within 1000 miles of Tokyo, but pressure has failed to draw the enemy into open waters.
N G McNurlen a 73 year old Keota resident and realtor died Saturday night at home from a heart attack while lighting his pipe after dinner. He had long suffered high blood pressure and heart disease. Funeral arrangements are set for 2 30 Friday at Keota Christian church with Marsh funeral home directing. his life began in Putnam Illinois February 21 1870 and he married Lot tie Glass in Keota on November 25 1902.
Allied forces in Italy press toward Rome as fresh units reinforce across the Volturno river. American and British troops seize Morrone and Cannio and seven nearby villages, while German counterattacks seek to delay the advance. Montelecilfone engagement tests the British 8th Army as Clark pins the enemy along the Capua corridor.
Berlin radio said Russian forces southeast of Kremen had achieved initial successes and were redoubling efforts to enlarge a bulge in German lines. Allied headquarters in Algiers reported Allies massing supplies for a long range bombing campaign against Germany from Italian bases, to be launched as soon as possible.
The Davenport Salvation Army vehicle toured Washington homes for charity pickups. Cards urged residents to place items in their front yards. Police were alerted after a sewing machine, bureau, rubber boots, and five overshoes were reported stolen from a North Marion avenue yard.
