More than 1,000 Iowa reservists entered active duty with the Army, to mobilize and move equipment by October 29. Units include the 1063rd Aviation Co. at Waterloo to Ft. Riley Kansas, the 495th Engineers with formations in Burlington Keokuk Mount Pleasant and Fort Madison heading to Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri, and the 301st Field Hospital at Cedar Rapids bound for Ft. Ord California. The call also covers the 41st Ordnance at Davenport to Ft. Sill Oklahoma and the 404th Signal Co. at Waterloo to provide field communications.

John Reed Gardner 73 died suddenly at 8 30 this morning at his Richland home Funeral arrangements are by Gould Funeral Home Richland He was born February 24 1888 near Packwood son of George and Emma Gardner He married Verle Hadley March 8 1914 at Woolson They lived in Chicago thirty years before moving to Richland six years ago He worked as a carpenter and later ran a small farm He was a member of Packwood Christian Church and the Elks Lodge of Chicago Survivors include his widow a son Clyde of Chicago and two sisters Mrs Pearl Newslon of Birmingham and Mrs Mabel Stieneke of Custer Dd

Washington's business district will gain a new look this Christmas season thanks to 111 business firms and 28 individuals and organizations who contributed to a fund for new decorations. The first purchase in about a decade will be added to usable existing décor. Santa and his sleigh will again light Central Park. Claude Woods oversees the renovation as 111 donors are listed, led by Dr M L Smith and Joe Falk Co, with names spanning banks, stores, and services.

Riverside Woman Anna Krotz Dies at 89
Anna Krotz 89 of Riverside died Sunday morning October 15 at Washington County Hospital after years of ill health. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 PM at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Lloyd Latta officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. She was born January 3, 1872 in Washington County near Richmond, married John Krotz in 1892, and lived on a Highland Township farm before moving to Riverside 24 years ago. She was a Red Cross volunteer and member of Willing Workers Club Highland Social Club and Garden Club. Survivors include four children William F. Krotz Joseph Krotz John Krotz and Mrs. Wilbur Chalupa, 17 grandchildren 40 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, plus two sisters Mrs. Charles Vondrasek and Mrs. Charles Krael. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
