The Silver Shadow, University of Iowa's dry night club, will start its fourth year with the 1939 40 season opening here Saturday night.
Mrs Carl Sulhofft shows a pear tree heavy with ripe fruit and abundant blooms. Recent frosts spared the blossoms though no blossoms remain on the tree.
A display of 15 prize winning paintings by Dan Rhodes, a Fort Dodge artist, opened at the Dubuque Public Library under the auspices of the Dubuque Art Association.
Marcus Lyon, a Sioux City man, was convicted of swindling Euston Summers of Winside Nebraska and a farmer from New, earning a five year term at Fort Madison prison. Lyon and accomplices Joe Hil and Chris Peterson from Council Bluffs were arrested after an alleged card game fraud in November.
Wellman members of the German Lutheran church razed their old building and are erecting a new structure on the same site. All labor is donated with Rev. William Krueger supervising the project.
Craig Baird, director of debate at the University of Iowa, announced this year’s Western conference topic. Resolved that the United States federal government should own and operate the railroads of the United States.
The first corn picking casualty in Linn county reports Thomas Wilkinson 64 whose left hand was amputated at the wrist at St Luke hospital. He was injured while picking corn near Central City.
A Davenport elevator exploded at West Bend releasing seven thousand bushels of shelled corn onto the ground. Fifteen thousand bushels were stored by Worth county producers and the remainder by Palo Alto county farmers.
Motorists in Burlington witnessed a boxed railroad car moved by truck from Stock Island to a Denmark area farm. The boxcar had wheels removed and will be loaded with resealed government corn.
The college reports a slight rise in enrollment under its work-study plan and has bought the Charlie Laird property as a new men's dormitory. Enrollment is restricted this year due to no more jobs available on the work-study program. The campus runs a dairy and downtown bakery.
President Roosevelt urged a just enduring peace and proclaimed November 11 Armistice Day, recalling shattered hopes of the last armistice and calling Americans to commemorate the date.
The Washington county hospital is renewed on the American College of Surgeons approved list announced in Philadelphia. It joins 65 state hospitals with high national standards and remains one of the smallest approved facilities, the only county hospital in the area to meet the mark.
A century ago on October 17 1838 Joseph Adams arrived in Washington Iowa and built a log house and a blacksmith shop marking the town’s first settlement alongside Daniel Powers tavern. By 1840 twelve families lived in the county seat as courts were held under a shade tree in a slough. The piece muses on population growth and possible boundary expansion ahead of the next census.

Fire department responders rushed to a residence on West Main Street after a morning alarm but found no fire or danger upon arrival. Residents were evacuated briefly as a precaution, then allowed to return home. No injuries or damages reported.
Sheriff R M Putnam found four Iowa City youths stripping a wrecked stolen A M Gardner car southeast of Iowa City after the vehicle was burned. The engine parts including the carburetor and distributor were removed while the engine remained intact. The suspects Charles Fulton 19 was held on larceny. Richard Fulton Don Burkett 17 and Ronald Burkett 16 were sent to juvenile authorities.
The Y M C A announces its annual membership and finance campaign to begin in November. A committee led by Leslie Dunlap and S W Livingston plans the drive and a breakfast event, with wards to handle solicitations and campaign captains to be named soon. Members may choose various types, including regular, young men, industrial, rural, partnership, and boys memberships.
Washington churches plan a union service at 10 a.m. on Thursday November 30 with Dr F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church delivering the sermon. The Baptist church will host and conduct the program with ministers assisting and men from all churches expected to attend.

Frank P. Lillig of Keota is in Washington County Hospital after a ten foot fall at the grain elevator in West Chester. The 41 year old man has six crushed ribs and is in fair condition. He reportedly did not see the embankment due to glare from a truck’s lights near the elevator entry.
Lloyd Thurston of Osceola will address Armistice Day events for Leon Beatty post. The banquet at the Y and a high school junior college assembly are planned for Friday November 10 with Thurston former congressman and Iowa senator candidate.
County Superintendent Lester Krabill announces a circulating library of 850 volumes installed in the county courthouse balcony. Librarian Kathryn Latta leads setup. the library, now under the superintendent’s office, will serve teachers and offers travel, religion, Indians, etiquette, social studies, science, history, fiction and more at no extra cost.
Albia high school's marching band joins eleven others in the Case field event this Saturday afternoon starting at 1 30. Albin's band competes in Class A with Fairfield Fort Madison Knoxville and Washington as baton twirlers begin the program before Class C B and A performances.
British admiralty reported a second air raid over the Orkney islands with no British damage or casualties. German planes were shot down, as air and submarine blows pressuring seapower along the allied blockade. The Royal Oak and Iron Duke incidents at Scapa Flow and First of Forth yards illustrated intensified German raids as Churchill warned of submarine losses.
Tomorrow Washington residents may tour the new Stewart elementary school via an open house run by the PTA council. From 2:30 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm the community can view the modern facilities and equipment while board of education members and Stewart teachers answer questions. No school session is held that afternoon.
