The attorney general's office ruled that bachelors spinsters and married persons may obtain a homestead tax credit on their property confirming a previous opinion.
Waterloo Or Paul H. Debner, 37, was sentenced to seven years in Fort Madison penitentiary after pleading guilty to obtaining money by false pretenses. He admitted cashing a bad check for 17.95 dollars.
Des Moines units of the Iowa national guard opened two recruiting offices to fill a quota of 150 men. The move forms part of a statewide 1,500 increase in National Guard forces.
The Ottumwa city council announced a ban on sound trucks and loud radios in business districts. Mayor C A Hill called the blasts a serious nuisance for pedestrians and motorists.
More than 250 veterinarians from across the country attended the twenty sixth annual Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association meeting. Attendees included Richard K Shope of the Rockefeller Foundation, noted for swine and human influenza research, and Dr. D. M. Campbell of Chicago who said veterinary work is vital to food and clothing and that hog cholera is under complete Iowa control and likely eradicated.
Des Moines public school teachers and other employees in contact with pupils will receive required physical tests. The program, backed by the Polk County Medical Society and funded by the tuberculosis society then by the school board, will cost $2,500 to $3,000 annually with no charge to those examined. superintendent A. W. Merrill cites national progress in health programs and protection for both staff and students.
An explosion at the National Powder company plant in Eldred Pennsylvania killed five employees and shook the district. The blast occurred in a strong building used as a mixing plant at one of the area’s largest facilities manufacturing high explosives for oil well work nearby.
Justice of the Peace J K Bo Vee sentenced Roy Anderson, 39, to thirty days in the county jail after he pleaded guilty to uttering a two dollar false check. Anderson was arrested by police at Newton and brought back here late yesterday.
Remodeling begins on the R. B. Dougherty building to house the Smart and Trifty store by Marshall Oberstein Inc. The chain, already in Oskaloosa Overwe in Fort Madison Boone and York Neb, will offer women's wear and hosiery with a later shoe department. November 4 is the tentative opening date with Nick Roth supervising the remodel and a complete interior renovation planned.
United Automobile Workers set up a picket line at Chrysler's Dodge main plant in Detroit as a vote to strike was reported. Company officials said only a fraction of the 11 000 workers entered, with machines run when possible and others sent home after a few minutes.
The November term jurors were drawn by the clerk of court county auditor and county recorder for a term starting Monday November 13 with Judge P J Siegers presiding. Jurors report for duty Monday November 20 unless otherwise notified. A tri county Boy Scout gathering in Iowa City drew representatives from Kalona Williamsburg Washington Matermo and Iowa City with leaders Nic McCleery and others. The meeting set a year long program and called for county by county gatherings including Washington county Thursday at 7 30 PM in the YMCA community room.
Clair Swank, 36, of Kirksville Missouri, bound over to the county grand jury on first degree murder in the shooting of Arthur Geifman, 24, Ottumwa shoe store proprietor. Ballistics report linked a .32 caliber revolver to the fatal bullet. Swank had no attorney. Mr and Mrs C T Johnson Jr of Wellman visited Ottumwa.
Leffler says plans include a Mission Texas trip where her son in law Harold Bieg linked to a citrus development company will split time. He will also visit Iowa and Illinois on related business. The Leffler cafe has operated five years since buying the restaurant December 17 1934 from Mrs Ray Minick and has grown under their management.
The Legion Post plans Armistice Day activities featuring the Stewart School flag on November 10. An Armistice Banquet and district meeting are also slated for Bonaparte tomorrow with invitation extended.
The Leon Beatty American Legion post reports a committee to plan Armistice Day observances in Washington with Warland Mead E A Ralston and Preston Wolf. Dr Tom McCabe to speak on Armistice Day morning after 11 oclock bombs by Veterans of Foreign Wars. The post will present a new flag to Stewart school on Nov 10 and to Lincoln school after completion. An Armistice banquet is set for 6:30 PM Nov 10 at the Y M C A for paid 1929 or 1940 Levy Beatty post members. Several members plan to attend the first district Legion conference in Bonaparte tomorrow led by district commander Fred Downing.
Fred Downing commander first district American Legion spoke to the Y's Men's Club outlining the Legion stance on Americanism and a policy of strict neutrality amid European tensions. He warned against fatalistic calls to enter war and defended avoiding cannon fodder for European battles. The talk noted endured pensions pressure from GA R and England’s debt claim.
Members and friends of the Methodist church are invited to a Friday anniversary dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the church basement to honor 50-year members, followed by an 8 p.m. tableau about the church’s 1839 organization in the auditorium. Dr. A. S. Smith will speak. The dinner committee includes Mrs. Clarence Jacobs, Mrs. Byron Snider and Mrs. R. K. Shannon.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam said Roy Furman and Louis Glick signed statements admitting participation in stealing the A. M. Gardner car from a Wellman Oakdale pavilion parking lot last Friday night. They were arrested and jailed. both deny wrecking the car or starting the fire that burned the vehicle near Iowa City.
Proceeds will be used in community service activities sponsored by the club.
In a heated Commons session Labour leader Atlee blasted government wartime policy and questioned economic mobilization as Prime Minister Chamberlain reported German raids. He pressed for explanations on the Royal Oak sinking and air attacks near Scapa Flow and Firth of Forth. Chamberlain warned of more vigorous aerial assaults as Britain braces for further war challenges.
The British foreign office said Moscow negotiations collapsed because Russia proposed Balkan dominance and limits on the Dardanelles waterway. It cited a Turkish refusal and Balkan legations reporting four key demands including a Russian Turkish pact acknowledging Balkan influence and blocking non Black Sea ships. Separately, Iowa City youths were arrested after dismantling a wrecking example seized by Sheriff Putnam.
