A Des Moines column notes that a local charitable organization withdrew as sponsor of the Biblical drama A Broken Idol. The play was to be staged in November to raise funds for Christmas charity work.
Newton Iowa Senator Hoss R Mowry told veterans at Newton that the state powwow should focus on building naval and air forces and an army capable of adequate defense and strong enough to command respect from any nation, by force if needed.
Oliver Tuste, 73, of Hardin Illinois died from injuries after falling down stairs in the Humboldt home of his daughter Mrs. R. A. Skaugstad. He opened the basement door by mistake while visiting.
P Kk Farris resigned as vice president of the central labor union after serving about two weeks. He said he left to devote all his time to the Council Bluffs building trades council, of which he is president.
Dr Vivian Thom as Smith will be inaugurated as president of Upper Town University in Fayette on Oct 28 succeeding Dr Arthur E Bennet. He is 63, a graduate of Greenville College and the University of Illinois with an arts bachelor and a PhD. He previously served as dean at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina Kansas before moving to Upper Iowa.
Waterloo Burlington was awarded the spring convention of the Iowa Numismatic Association at a meeting attended by about 125 members. More than 1200 people viewed stamp and coin exhibits in the afternoon, and the annual auction sold several hundred coins. Next spring the Iowa group will meet with the Central States Numismatic Society convention in Burlington.
The Tama Indians of Tama Iowa will not pay a federal amusement tax on their annual pow wow receipts. The Internal Revenue Service attempted to collect the 10 percent tax after the Mesquakies ceremony, but funds were distributed to individual members.
Members of the Associated Credit Bureaus of Iowa opened their tenth annual convention at the Hotel Savery in Des Moines with about 100 registering early. The opening session featured routine business plus a Credit Women's Breakfast luncheon and a "school day" program for credit bureau secretaries and managers followed by a buffet supper.
Nearly 2,000 Townsend club members attended their state rally in Marshalltown. Dr Francis E Townsend, founder of the Townsend plan, spoke at both afternoon and evening sessions. Townsend and followers remained optimistic about the plan becoming law in the January session of Congress.
Dr. Frank L. Mott of the State University of Iowa journalism school in Iowa City received the Johnson Brigham plaque for the year’s outstanding Iowa author contribution. The award honors his two volume work A History of American Magazines. Mrs Dorothy M Higbie of Cornell College presented the plaque at the Iowa Library Association convention in Mount Vernon. This marks the second honor for Dr Mott within a year following his Pulitzer prize win.
Francine Mills, 16, of Washington, is hospitalized in serious condition with a brain concussion and a broken right thigh after a southbound collision seven miles south of town near the Coppock road. Driver Derald Edwards, 17, suffered facial injuries. both were taken to the county hospital. A second accident on primary road No 92 near Washington involved a truck and a car. Maurice Farrier, 13, injured minor.

The first delivery of 1940 automobile plates for Washington County arrived at the county treasurer Marion George's office. Plates were produced by prisoners at the Anamosa reformatory and will go on sale December 1. Special numbers can be requested after November 15 through the auto department under Bess Jones. The county issued 5,650 car licenses and 775 truck licenses this year.
Agent Lewis Goodlander of the Rock Island announces a new departure time for No. 44. The early morning eastbound passenger train will leave at 2 27 a m instead of 1 59 a m.
The Washington Methodist church began a week of centennial events with Dr W W Bowers of Cedar Falls delivering a sermon on For me to live is Christ. He recalled ten years as former pastor and the move from New England to Washington. Dr R C Keagy followed with Thus Far Safe, a 40 minute evening sermon. A congratulatory message from the Presbyterian church was read at yesterday morning’s service.
Washington hosts 11 high school marching bands plus baton twirlers in a statewide contest at Casefield on Saturday October 21. Classes C B and A perform from 1:30 p.m. with color and school uniforms, ratings by judges announced later. Admission 25 cents for students 35 cents for adults.

Mayor Maury Maverick of San Antonio was indicted today by a county grand jury on five felony counts and one misdemeanor. The charges were not detailed publicly. Iowa City police reported a 1985 Chevrolet stolen from Wellman last Friday night was located five miles southeast of Iowa City about 10:30 last night. The car was destroyed by fire after being ditched on a by-road and overturned with two tires removed. Sheriff H. M. Putnam planned an investigation. The vehicle belonged to A. M. Cardner of the Wellman community.
Jane Knupp, student at MacMurrey College for Girls in Jacksonville Illinois, has been chosen for the major role in the school band. The college lists 600 girls enrolled.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Key Pittman announced an agreement to amend Roosevelt’s neutrality measure by removing the 90 days credit provision and restoring a cash and carry principle. The change, following bipartisan criticism, aims to ease passage of the bill while maintaining the core arms embargo repeal for belligerents.

Paris dispatch says Germany is pouring troops and mechanized units along a 75 mile front between the Moselle and Saar rivers in preparation for an early offensive.
