Town Baptists concluded their annual convention with sessions aimed at reducing liquor consumption and promoting sobriety in the community.
Cornell College students and faculty in Mt Vernon cast 286 for Landon and 169 for Roosevelt in a straw vote. Four years ago students supported Hoover over Roosevelt by six to one.

James Roosevelt said the president would seek a constitutional amendment to make NRA principles law if re elected. He claimed the NRA was struck down by the supreme court causing unemployment and argued shortening work hours as a fix.

Officers named at the county Christian Education convention held at West Chester United Presbyterian Church include Howard Benn Jr president of Pleasant Hill church and Maurice Meyer vice president. District presidents named for Crawfordsville West Chester Kalona Ainsworth Washington Brighton and Kalona superintendent roles awarded to local leaders. Rubio Friends and Pleasant Hill Christian churches won pictures for near tied points. Over seventy registered and the day’s program proceeded as planned.
A 49 year old Kansas City man, Frank Joseph Dettman, was found dead in a room at the Goode hotel around 11 30 this morning. County coroner Dr W Kyle and Sheriff H M Putnam investigated and said the man had been dead for hours. he was a World War veteran. The body was taken to L A Jones funeral home pending relatives inquiry. Dettman had arrived in Washington yesterday seeking transport to Milwaukee and requested medicine for chest pain before retiring yesterday afternoon. In Iowa, a separate report shows old age pensions reduced relief rolls by about 9 600 in 99 counties, with Polk county alone removing 62 percent of its relief cases.
A man identified as Dettman was found dead in a room shortly before noon. He stood about five feet seven inches tall, weighed around 135 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Ernest Simpson, shown on his first honeymoon with Dorothea Parsons Dechert Simpson, now divorced and based in New York, faces a divorce suit from his second wife Mrs. Wally Simpson, a close confidante of King Edward VIII.
The American Federation of Labor urged over two million members to take a nonpartisan role in the upcoming election. The executive council released a report analyzing Roosevelt and Landon without endorsing either candidate. It urged members to vote on November 3 and to stand by friends and oppose enemies.
At the Bapt ist State convention in Cedar Rapids Iowa Rev M C Carstensen received two honors He was elected president of the pastors conference a body of about 300 ministers and later elected vice president of the convention The layman CC J Morrow of Ottumwa serves as president the honors reflect the esteem for Carstensen based on 15 years of work in the state He arrived home last night from Cedar Rapids.
Washington county residents who cannot be home on election day may obtain absent voters ballots next Monday at the county auditor’s office. Ballots for the November 3 election have been printed and distributed to polling places. Out of county residents whose precincts are in Washington county can also secure ballots from the auditor. Incapacitated voters may apply to have ballots mailed and vote in the presence of a notary public. Miss Ethel Grecian, county auditor, said many have already applied.
Everett Sanders former secretary to President Coolidge and 1932 GOP chair will speak in Washington this evening at 8 30 replacing 8 00. The venue could be Central Park if mild weather or the high school auditorium if rain. public address system will announce changes. The Washington Municipal Band will play and lead attendees to the alternate site. Sanders recently spoke in Oelwein and Iowa City en route to Washington.
The Washington County Hospital has again been approved by the American College of Surgeons. It remains among Iowa’s select few to hold this status, with 35 beds and a notable standing despite its county hospital designation. Other Iowa hospitals on the list range from Decorah’s 30 beds to Iowa City’s 1040, including many cities such as Ames, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo.
Four Colfax youths were injured, one critically, when their car rear ended a truck in Marengo Iowa en route to the homecoming game in Iowa City. Injured were Maynard Brinkerd 19 Eva Ward 20 Gill Tilden 18 and Ivan Susie 16. Truck was driven by Mrs Ed Sohn of Omaha Nebraska. she and her son Ray were uninjured.
A one day session of district court is set for Friday October 23 in Washington. Judge P. G. Siegers of Newton, appointed by Governor Herring to succeed the late Judge D. W. Hamilton, will preside. This will be his first local court session and he is the Democratic candidate at the November 3 general election facing Republican A K Baldrige of Washington.
A 16 year old girl, Mildred Rath, died after a car carrying four high school students left a curve at the junction of two state highways near Davenport. Two classmates suffered serious injuries and one minor fracture, another student had head injuries. An inquest was set for 7:39 PM in Scott County. The death toll from Iowa highway accidents reached 411 for the year.
