Mrs. Percy V. Pennybacker of Austin Texas urged grandmothers to adopt smart clothes as a sign of aging gracefully while linking fashion to social reform. In a Hoyt Sherman Place talk she urged women to engage with world economic and sociological issues, calling for action by older generations.
Roland Kumzak of Milford offered a free leap with his home made batwings after a failed smoke display drew disappointment from about ten thousand spectators last Sunday. He aims to repeat the stunt next Sunday at no charge to the public to ease his conscience.
A deed filed in Tipton transfers the West Branch birthplace from Fred Albin to Allan Hoover son of former president Herbert Hoover. Albin bought the property from Jennie Scellars heirs for 4500 dollars. The Hoovers have possession but plans for the site are not disclosed.
Firefighters sped down the wrong road chasing a false alarm at the John Rebenberg farm near Grundy Center. They failed to find the blaze, then returned to town. A second alarm sent them to the correct location.

Julia Plessy, the oldest resident of Muscatine, died in the Paul Begey home at age 102. She had lived in the city 40 years and at the Begey residence for 24 years. She remained in excellent health and retained her senses to the end.
Des Moines police monitored Halloween timing after receiving over 20 calls, 16 in one hour ten minutes. The dispatch log alleged boys throwing tomatoes greasing street car rails and raiding melon patches, with the desk captain hoping the pattern does not foretell worse events.
Des Moines resident Lemuel Newell challenged a $150 assessment on two horses at the state fair grounds. After one horse died he asked the state board of assessment and review to reduce the value to $76.
In Eureka Kansas Ray Howard at the bottom of a 19 foot well spotted his son Donald ten toppling over the rim and braced to catch him. Donald escaped uninjured in the incident.
Six soldiers were injured when an army airplane, flying low, hit a wire across a road at Fort Hayes near Columbus and plunged into a marching column. The aircraft was destroyed. the pilot and mechanic were removed and others were rescued from the wreckage.
The Iowa news reel at the State theater will feature moments from the Iowa City football game against Colgate last Friday. Manager Ralph Pratt announced the upcoming showing as part of the weekly reel that airs the first three days of each week.

Unlike hundreds of other missionaries retreating toward Djibouti, he tends lepers and teaches catechism, continuing a 36 year charge as danger looms from Italian advances.

Don Radda pleaded guilty or willing to plead guilty to larceny of chickens from Clarence Fulton premises northwest of town. DES MOINES Oct 17 U P Walter Maley first assistant at torney general for Iowa appealed to the Iowa supreme court from a district court finding that upheld indictments by the Woodbury county grand jury in a state wide gambling syndicate case. Supreme Court Justice J W Anderson set Oct 21 for the hearing. Also named are Ray Harrison governor Herring’s representative and Joe Gagan Des Moines bandsman who are under indictment.
Educational corn-hog meetings in county towns draw representative farmer groups. Crawfordsville held sessions Tuesday and Wednesday night, Wellman hosts an afternoon meeting, Riverside gathers Friday, and the series closes with a city night address by Ralph Smith, special in Washington.
More than 1,000 people attended a Darktown Scandals stage show at the State theater yesterday evening. Despite the company claiming 35 performers, about half appeared and delivered a lively musical and dance program that the audience enjoyed. A feature detective-murder mystery film starring Warren William also drew a big crowd.
Miss Mary Mickey employed in the Montgomery Ward store office at Creston is visiting here today. She was transferred to the Creston office for the local office a couple of months ago.
Nearly 2 000 officers and delegates will attend the annual Grand Chapter session of the Order of Eastern Star of Iowa in Des Moines. The convention opens Monday with registration and runs through Thursday with a Tuesday formal opening at the Shrine auditorium and addresses by Grand officers and city officials. Election of officers will be held and sessions will cover lodge matters.

County Supt. Lester B. Kra announces a study center for country teachers to be held Saturday at the court house with Prof. H. C. Moeller of Iowa State Teachers College as lecturer. Krabill also notes teachers’ examinations set for next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday October 28 24 and 26.
Justice J E Bovee and state patrolman John Gildroy fined and costs assessed to motorists at the junction of primary roads No 3 and No 161 east of Ainsworth. Several drivers had licenses clipped as punishment for failing to stop at signs, after careful patrols and arrests at the intersection.

In Addis Ababa on October 17, Emperor Haile Selassie urged 40,000 armed men to defend their homeland against Italian forces. The crowd pledged to fight to the death, waving swords spears and guns, and prepared to march to the front.
Zeila reports of a raid into British Somaliland claim natives and British subjects were killed and livestock gassed by Italians. The British vice consul urged caution, warning the tale could escalate into a wider incident involving Great Britain.
