Oelwein population nearly doubles as 5 090 people attend a pancake festival. Thirty cooks toil from noon to night to make flapjacks from 1500 pounds of flour and 100 pounds of butter. Three fainted from the effort.
Boundary dispute between Iowa and Missouri over a line near here to be reviewed by Charles W. Storms a Missouri official and a Missouri auditor representative to determine the true boundary between the states Fort Madison Iowa region.
Des Moines report details an apparent amateur crime in which a thief stole an estimated 25 to 50 dollars in quarters from envelopes mailed to the state drivers license department. Secretary of State Mrs Ale Miller said several complaints reached the motor vehicle division from people who mailed license applications and did not receive them.
Seventeen year old Leona Perry walked into police headquarters and drank carbolic acid, saying she was despondent after someone robbed her of eight dollars from daily street candy receipts.
Algona resident Lawrence Sanftner arrived home from Raton New Mexico after a 980 mile drive in 34 hours with only brief stops for food gas and oil. His wife aboard joked he should never attempt it again.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association plans a meeting of 21 group leaders and state officers to discuss a fair trade act. The main proposal seeks drug jobbers to set a minimum price enabling retailers to gain a 33 percent minimum markup.
A corn husking bee at the farm home of Mrs. Helen Dolash in Toledo featured both women and men as participants. A duck dinner was served by Mrs. Dolash.
Waterloo Iowa 4 H dairy judging team from Black Hawk county won the national 4 H dairy cattle judging contest in St Louis beating 19 state champions. The Iowa trio Vincent Kelley Washburn Clinton Sage Water loo and Kenneth Kramer Water loo scored 3929 of 4800 points. Maryland was second with 3920.
Muscatine report says an 80 day strike by Hawkeye Button workers is easing with cutters part of the plant tottering. They sought a 15 percent raise and protested how buttons were culled, signaling the stoppage may be near its end.
Governor Herring condemned Republican critics during a Polk County Democratic Women’s Club event. He cited Democratic state achievements and dismissed opposition as desperate, despicable efforts for personal political gain.
Engineer John Schur halted a locomotive on the Erie line after spotting a large whitewashed object resembling a cannonball along the track. The object proved to be a puff ball measuring 48 inches in circumference and weighing about 10 pounds.
The burned barn in Ontarioville Illinois yielded the body of William J Harrison a Barker Karpis gang member. Hoover announced Harrison took part in the kidnapping of Edward G Bremer the St Paul brewer two years earlier. Federal agents had pursued him since Bremer was freed.

In a free for all fight between union and non union miners a mile below the surface in the shaft of the Trew Lewis mine 40 unionists were injured. When brought to the surface hundreds gathered around the pit head and another battle appeared probable.

Funeral services for Mrs Sol Rich former Washington woman who died in Chicago last week will be held Friday morning at 10 30 at Sherman s funeral home in charge of Dr F W Eastwood. The ashes will be buried in Elm Grove cemetery. Mrs Rich s brothers coming from Chicago Thursday evening will be guests at Mrs Frank Bell s home during their stay.
Vernon Tucker was identified as the driver of a light truck in a Monday evening collision that injured B F Tucker, who was a passenger in the parked truck. The elder B F Tucker does not drive and was injured when a car blinded by another vehicle crashed into the parked light Tucker truck. He was taken to the county hospital and, while very stiff and sore, his condition was not expected to be serious.

Hollywood obit reports actor Sam Hardy age 62 died suddenly in a Hollywood hospital after a period of illness. The stage and screen veteran was known for a wide range of roles across theater and film. He twice dominated Broadway?
