Washington firemen rushed to 518 South Marion Avenue after a belt slipped on a washing machine caused smoke. No damage was reported. City hall notes residents keep calling the police over the alarm and urges familiarity with the fire siren. Equipment to send fire signals by telephone is incoming and will reduce siren use for most fires.
UPI reports the Pentagon alerted units of the 82nd Airborne Division as a precaution amid a court ordered school integration plan by bus. Earlier Gov. Sargent mobilized the state National Guard and 450 riot trained police were deployed in Boston to handle violence. No immediate order to deploy the airborne troops was given.
Bettendorf resident Charles Kline reported a burglary at about 2 a.m. when he found his back door kicked in and a coin collection missing. The collection valued at 10 000 to 15 000 dollars consisted mainly of old nickels dimes quarters and half dollars. State crime lab officials assisted Bettendorf police in the investigation.
Michigan National Bank of Detroit told one quarter of its savings customers with balances of $50 or less to move their accounts or increase their balances. The policy, aimed at reducing costly transactions, applies only to Detroit branches and was announced by President George A. Pierson.
Republican U S Senate hopeful Dave Stanley accused Democrat Rep John Culver of wasting taxpayers money by missing votes. He said Culver earns 42500 while voting only 72 percent and missed 148 million in spending votes this year. He spoke in Osage calling for restraint against inflation.
John W. Dean III testified in the Watergate cover-up trial that a $1 million campaign plan involving mugging squads kidnapping leaders and prostitutes was discussed five months before the 1972 burglary in Mitchells office. He recounted meetings with Mitchell and Haldeman and identified defendants at the trial.
Gov. Robert D. Ray will address a special meeting of Iowa's Energy Policy Council in Des Moines to discuss energy conservation proposals sparked by President Ford's inflation message. He plans an awareness committee, similar to WIN, to promote conservation with educators and private sector involvement.
