Washington man named Marshalltown city assessor
Dave Siefkas of Washington will become Marshalltown city assessor effective December 1. The 26 year old was approved by the city conference board to serve the remaining five years of the retiring assessor's term. Siefkas has 12 years as an assistant to H Ernest Lund of Washington County and is a native of Osceola who moved to Marshalltown in 1963. He and his wife Meri Jo have one son Jeremy.

Theft reports from skating rink and Brighton barn
Washington County deputies investigated thefts at the skating rink on the county fairgrounds and at a Brighton barn. A missing cash register was found at the rink and saddles and harnesses owned by Ed Mineart were reported stolen from the Brighton barn likely Sunday night.

Fire at Davenport area farm kills hogs and damages buildings
A Davenport area blaze at the Carl Arp farm northwest of Davenport killed 35 hogs and destroyed 40 more, with 65 saved. The fire began in a corn crib, spread to a storage shed and hog barn, damaging two tractors and multiple implements along with 4000 bushels of oats. Firefighters from Davenport and Walcott battled the fire for hours.

Rock Island men arrested in Davenport for counterfeit bills
Two Rock Island men, Robert Johnson and Gerald Pierce, were arrested early today in Davenport on counterfeiting charges after allegedly passing portions of $10 bills onto $1 bills at a service station. They are held in Scott County Jail.
