Detroit Salesman Confesses in Attacks on Retailers
Ellis Gillum Jr a 26 year old tobacco salesman confessed to attacking six people in a drunken over hour spree in Detroit. One victim Dorothy Julien 47 died from a skull fracture while others including an expectant mother survived injuries. Police traced evidence to a candy and tobacco salesmen convention and Gillum was arrested after officers found a blood stained suit.

Lee Shippy of Newton High School won the senior high division $20 Agnes V Flannery award. Constance Carpenter of Callanan Des Moines won the junior high $15 Mary Lourdes Conway award. A three car collision east of the Iowa River bridge near Columbus Junction injured R K E Bennett's mother, who received head injuries and was hospitalized in Davenport after lights failed on Bennett's car.
