Robert Ney known as Webb Ney died at about 72 from apoplexy while turning the key to close the hardware store he ran with his brother Will Ney. His wife sures.
Stephen Nelson, 32, and Wes Jnion face charges of selling megaged property amid an incident where Nelson was beaten and gagged by two men who gave him a ride and dumped him in a cornfield on a Farm County farm where he is recovering from injuries.
A federal Works Agency survey released in Washington shows Iowa highway users paid 27.156 million dollars in direct state taxes. The figures include gasoline taxes motor vehicle licenses and motor carrier taxes with 14.8 percent of total national funds devoted to nonhighway purposes.
Miss Ethel Mae Jones associate professor of history at Drake University Des Moines will discuss The Outlook for the British Empire at Grinnell College during the tenth annual student conference on international relations. Jones spent years in Burma heading an English girls high school. An afternoon forum on the topic will follow her morning lecture.

E. H. Birmingham, chairman of the Iowa Democratic state central committee, charges the Iowa liquor control commission engaged in political activity contrary to law. The claims involve a Des Moines bulletin by Julius R. Jensen to commission and liquor store employees containing voting advice.
Miss Lillian Kanealy of Hotel Savery Des Moines, long time stenographer, announced purchase of Story County Memorial Park cemetery near Ames. The 10 acre site lies with Emerald farm across the road, with Kanealy having bought Emerald in 1931.
Three cases of honeymoon liquor were confiscated and LeRoy Scanlon aged 24 of Cedar Rapids was charged with illegal possession of liquor after his arrest by State Agent Lais Kelly. Police Magistrate John J McSwiggin postponed a preliminary hearing until November 14 so Scanlon could use his car on his honeymoon.
Berlin and London dispatches report large scale raids across England Scotland and Wales. German air fleets bombed coastal towns London and Liverpool with fires seen for miles. Casualties feared as schools hospitals a college and churches were hit.
A fire at 202 East Main Street near the city library threatened a historic building housing doctors' offices and a residence. Firefighters confined the flames to the basement furnace area, with smoke causing damage to Dr. A Keith Droz's office, Dr. W E Anderson's space, and the Schroede apartment. Insurance covers most losses. Water damage was avoided by not dousing the basement.
The first heavy frost of fall 1940 hits Washington with 30 degree low. By afternoon the temperature rose to 59 degrees as conditions moderated. A office fire at Dr. Droz's building was spotted by Marjorie Phillips and contained quickly, aided by a new sprayer nozzle.
Mrs. Cecil Harden will speak Thursday at 2 30 pm in the YMCA community room. She is a veteran Indiana Republican official, Covington native, and mother of Murray Harden. The event invites wives of Iowa officials and aims for a large Washington women turnout.

On the Willkie campaign train en route to Cincinnati Wendell L. Willkie urged President Roosevelt supporters to press him to define what his policies would be if re elected. He criticized the New Deal economy as a tragedy of scarcity amid possible abundance and planned a major relief speech to air on NBC between 7 30 and 8 00 p m central standard time.
President Roosevelt announced to 16,404,000 men registering for the first peacetime draft that the effort defends democracy and world peace. He called it a keystone of national defense and said the world’s free men must remain prepared. Governors and officials also registered, while Nazi and British reactions were noted.
Washington county registrants line up as 21 to 35 year olds register for selective service. An estimated 3000 in the county may register across 22 precincts by tonight with about 750 expected in the four wards. By 10 pm about one third had registered in the four wards, with numbers and locations at city hall and courthouse. The draft board will number cards tomorrow, open to the public, and report totals to the county auditor. Hollywood and national news note many stars are over eligible age. Willkie tour plans include registering press and others on board. The drafting office opened with Lahoma Johnson on duty as first clerk.

Cedar county officials puzzled by a car found in the Cedar river near Rochester. The vehicle was driven across refuse from a nearby quarry into the river, with authorities unable to determine how it ended up about 40 feet from the riverbank.
