James M. Robertson, a graduate student at the State University of Iowa, has been awarded a $1,000 fellowship by the American Society of Civil Engineers for work in advanced hydraulics. He represents Iowa City in this engineering honor.
In Iowa City the University of Iowa Bacomal series opens with Dr James Rowland AY WW, former Yale president, now educational counselor to the National Broadcasting Yo, delivering the first of 11 scheduled lectures. The event marks a start to a broader teaching initiative.
Dr T J Mof fet prepared for duck season but missed opening day due to a telephone interruption. Teressa Kerry Teale, a 6 pound newborn, is reported healthy in the Teale household of Charles W. Teale.
A mother and her three children were rushed to safety by Mrs Johnson as flames engulfed the Stuart farm house. Other buildings on the property were saved despite the blaze.
Keokuk school board received a highly favorable response to a questionnaire asking senior high school students and their parents whether they would support forming an ROTC unit at the local school. The board decided to apply for ROTC membership based on the results.
Gasoline seeping from a main of the Great Lakes Pipeline Co. west of Northwood saturated ground and caught fire. The pumping station near Gordonsville, Minn., was notified, pumps were shut off, and a chemical extinguisher used to quell the blaze with no explosion reported.
Harold Wi Mamas Williams, 25, of La Porte City followed his two brothers into the service and left for the Great Lakes training station. His brothers Vernon, 18, enlisted in September 1939, and Warren, 21 joined the navy last February. They are sons of Mr and Mrs Harold B Williams of La Porte City.
Eight civic leaders at the Iowa Rural Leaders conference urged that confusion in thinking and lack of clarity on danger threaten democracy. They proposed three measures: economic security, adult education and open discussion to inform minorities, and strengthening civil rights.
Ground will be broken in November for a $25,000 addition to Hast Hall on the State University of Iowa campus to provide extra space for the School of Journalism. Plans were announced by George Horner, university architect, and A. A. Smith, superintendent of buildings and grounds.

Washington County completed its registration of men aged 21 to 36 with 2085 filings, including 1323 from outside the county. The board will assign serial numbers this afternoon and sorting of nonresidents continues as cards move to state governors for transfer to local draft boards.
Washington County Medical Society announced a fall vaccination campaign for smallpox and diphtheria in cooperation with the Iowa State Medical Society and the Iowa State Department of Health. The drive aims to build a protected population to prevent outbreaks, stressing painless preventive measures and highlighting ongoing, though reduced, case numbers in Iowa.
Great Britain's traffic ban on the Burma road expired at midnight reopening the mountain route as a vital life line in China's fight against Japan. In defiance of threats, 5,000 Chinese laborers worked all day loading 2,000 American built trucks for dispatch along the highway to Chungking.
Wendell Willkie told a 12 000 crowd in Evansville Indiana that a Republican victory would bring real jobs and futures for every family, replacing state dependence under the New Deal. Two eggs were thrown at him but missed.
Mrs Viola Smith of MacAlester Oklahoma arrived to serve as anesthetist at Washington County Hospital filling the vacancy left by Blanche Robertson who left for Geneseo Montana to supervise J C Hammond Hospital. Smith is a Barnes Hospital trained graduate in St Louis Missouri. Dorothy Webking Graceville Minnesota becomes laboratory and x ray technician assisting Dr G C Boice. Webking is a Northwest Medical Institute of Technology graduate in Minneapolis Minnesota.
Reports from rural residents near Washington describe early Halloween vandalism. Sheriff H M Putnam investigated damaged farm equipment, hayrakes, wagon parts, and a trailer towed by a car. Outbuildings at schoolhouses tipped, maltboxes broken, and other property damage attributed to a band of vandals.
The War Department announced a cantonment for 35 000 men to be built in Decatur and Wayne counties near Woodland Iowa. The sixth division will be concentrated there and housing will be ready by February 1941. The camp will serve as the seventh corps area training center and a replacement center for white and colored troops. An office opened in Leon Iowa for development work and land purchase checks begin at once. The exact location may be announced Saturday with the Farm Security Administration in charge of farmer rehabilitation. About 5 000 workers are expected for round the clock construction.
A new driving speed study forwarded to the Motor Club of Iowa shows more motorists now travel 40 to 50 mph, with fewer under 40 or over 55. The survey notes newer cars and higher priced models tend to go faster, urban entry boosts speed, and men drive more miles and have more accidents than women.
Ambrose Jaeger a 39 year old farmer from four miles northwest of Keota suffered the loss of all fingers and the end of his thumb on his right hand in a cornpicker accident. He was brought to Washington county hospital around 10 this morning where doctors performed the amputations.
A men's meeting at the Christian church formed a temporary club with Leslie Dunlap as chairman. A committee will plan a program for the next meeting in the second week of November, when women will host a father and son banquet. Leigh W. Soule spoke at last night's program after a pancake and sausage supper prepared by Charles Doran and his son Donald.
At the United Presbyterian church meeting of the 26 member pulpit committee KE L Stewart was chosen chairman Mau rine Trotman named secretary A smaller actions committee was formed consisting of Stewart H H McCleery and M C DeLong to report to the larger panel.
Waterloo resident Joe Utterback is holding $45,000 in cash that does not belong to him while attempting to deliver it to the proper recipients. The sum is half of a 6.54 percent payment to Pioneer National Bank depositors, made on Sept 29, with a deadline of Nov 15 for collection in Waterloo.
The survey shows younger cars involved in more accidents than older models. Results will guide accident-prevention work and safety campaigns.

Washington residents may catch a 30 minute Shrine band program by 50 musicians from Kaaba Shrine temple Davenport at the Rock Island station this evening. The Kaaba special train will depart Davenport for Tulsa with temple officers and will stop in Washington for a quarter hour. Hal Reister will ride the train home. A Shrine meeting for temples in several states starts in Tulsa tomorrow and the return train is due in Washington Sunday around 6 30.
Theodore P. Kelick announces the reappointment of six citizens to the national youth administration local advisory committee for Washington. The names include QO EB. Schmitt Albert Simpson Dr. O. F. Boller Harve P. Wilson A. K. E. Atchison and the Rev. C. W. Klein who will advise on NYA out of school work and project activities in Washington.
On October 17 at the John Wagener and Son farm three miles south of Washington the top boat price reached 65 dollars while the average stayed around 35 dollars. Gifts averaged 27 with a top of 35. Seventy head were sold with H M Duncan of Columbus Junction and William Bruty of Washington serving as auctioneers.
