Neils A. Sorensen, 46, a Pottawattamie county farmer, died of a heart attack while pitching hay in his barn loft. He had been in poor health for some time. Sorensen, born in Denmark, came to the area 20 years ago from Argentina.
Allen Crawford known as Bones, 48, of Waterloo, was released from the state penitentiary after a habeas corpus hearing before District Judge Joseph KR Leary. He had been sentenced in Waterloo in March 1928 by District Judge R W Hasner to 10 years for illegal narcotics possession under the 1928 town code. A 1927 law reducing first offense penalties to two years was cited.
Iowa City reports two additional co operative dormitories for 25 men each raising the total to 11. The houses are student run with each resident handling a specific duty, addressing the university housing shortage.
Evert Turner, 16, of a farm south of Council Bluffs, was found seriously wounded after his gun discharged while hunting. He fell into Mosquito Creek and suffered a lost thumb and facial injuries. he was found an hour and a half later by neighbor Ka Smith and hospitalized at Jen Me Edmundson.
Joe Bloom, 15, was punctured in the left eye by a fence staple while talking with Frank Bravo, 17, in the business district. A black coupe drove by and Bloom cried that he had been shot as he clutched his eye. Police suspect the staple may have been thrown from a tire or the car and Bloom was not expected to lose sight.
Fort Dodge Des Moines banker and coal operator Jensen wins an injunction stopping Anthony Sheker from interfering with coal prospecting on the Sheker land. Jensen claims mineral rights to the Des Moines river land grant farm. Judge WH. Eury notes Jensen is within his legal rights while acknowledging hardship from the river land grant dispute.
Germany reportedly has ten army divisions about 150 000 men assigned to Romania as Moscow circles report Russia and Turkey held talks with Moscow giving moral support to resisting axis pressure. In London German air squadrons attacked southeastern England with nine planes down and ten British fighters shot down.
Mrs Warren Donaldson died at 9 15 last night at her home north of Washington after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at Shermans Funeral Home with Rev William M Nichol. burial in Kim Grove cemetery. She was born Mary Ella Watson in Living Lake, married Dec 40 1897, lived near Living Lake and later moved to a farm east of Ainsworth before settling north of Washington. She is survived by her husband and sister Mrs Elizabeth Porter of Jelena Montana.
The first of three ships will depart Los Angeles to evacuate Americans from the Orient as steel and scrap shipments embargo takes effect. The Monterey Mariposa and Washington are slated for special trips to repatriate as many as possible from China and Japan. About 3,000 of roughly 17,000 Americans in the region are expected to depart.
Senator Clyde Herring of Iowa said the army will establish an artillery range and cantonment for 35 000 troops at Leon Iowa at a cost around 9 million dollars The artillery range alone costs 625 000 dollars Four Iowa firms received contracts to construct the cantonment which will cover 40 000 acres.
Iowa State College student Dave Pearson has pledged Theta Chi fraternity. The announcement notes his membership interest and ongoing fraternity activities on campus.
The Keokuk-Washington county corn husking contest set for October 18 will be at the E. L. Conrad farm near Seventy-Six center school. Six Washington county entrants are listed with five Keokuk county hopefuls, and a 2000-person crowd is anticipated if weather holds.
Mr and Mrs Fred Downing and Mr and Mrs M L Brown traveled to Iowa City this afternoon for American Legion and Legion Auxiliary meetings. They plan a banquet and dance this evening in support of the two organizations.

National efforts boost character building and welfare work with radio and newspaper coverage. The local association aligns with the national program of character education.
The Iowa supreme court upheld the murder conviction and life sentence of Lee Williams, 33, of Lucerne, Missouri, for shooting Elmo Harter at a Fairfield area beer tavern. The court found no errors in the jury instructions given by Judge Henry Taylor.

Buenos Aires reports the United States began talks with major South American nations on a diplomatic and military pact near a total defense alliance for the western hemisphere. The proposed accord would grant access to naval air and army bases for mutual defense among western hemisphere countries.
Richard Birney and David Pearson, both agricultural juniors from Washington, will join about 130 Iowa State College marching band members on a Friday trip to Columbia Missouri to perform at the Missouri game. The band will also play at homecoming with Oklahoma on Oct 26 and close the season with Drake on Nov 9.
Des Moines Attorney G Scott Davies fails to be certified as the Republican nominee for attorney general after the state supreme court upholds the canvass board. It affirms that late nominee Fred D. Everett of Albia won the June 3 primary with 142,911 votes to Davies 98,453, and Everett’s death before canvass does not nullify the vote record.
Washington residents will conduct a fall drive for tin cans starting Thursday October 17. Collectors will begin in the north end and cover most areas within two days, with cans placed in containers at the alley or curb for pickup. Street Commissioner A E Palmer leads the effort and notes some southern homes may be reached Friday.

Des Moines reports the State Conservation Commission extended pheasant hunting from three to seven days. The season runs from noon November 12 to 4 p.m. November 19, lengthened from previous years.

Washington county sets a one day registration for men aged 21 to 35 as the first step toward forming conscripted army units. Registration occurs tomorrow at polling-places, with wards one and four registering at the courthouse and wards two and three at the city hall.
President Roosevelt will speak seven minutes on compulsory military training tomorrow morning as registration for 16,404,000 men aged 21 to 35 begins. Networks will carry the talk at seven, and registration runs until night. Dr. Clarence Dykstra will become draft director, arriving Thursday.
On Oct 15 aboard a train en route to Buffalo Wendell Willkie renewed his attack on President Roosevelt over national defense saying army housing shortages would delay drafting. He traveled west across upper New York for a major address on national defense tonight in Buffalo.
