A professor in an eastern college asks city librarian Forrest B. Spalding to locate a business forecasting book he recalls seeing in 1932. The volume was on the northeast shelf by the river in the city library.
Lohrville reports the deaths of Mrs. Ernest Carey 35 and Dee Willoughby 30 from gunfire. A .45 revolver lay on the floor and a coroner's jury ruled murder and death by own action. A letter in Willoughby's pocket outlined a plan to kill Mrs. Carey and then himself.
The attorney general ruled that all physicians osteopaths and surgeons licensed in other states but not in Iowa before July 4 must pass the new Iowa basic science examinations to be eligible for an Iowa license. The ruling clarifies licensing requirements under the state basic science law.
A film caused a major fire destroying three buildings in Pioneer, 12 miles southwest of Humboldt. Fire cut telephone lines to Pioneer. information was not definite. The hall above the cinema caught fire, spreading to Morey’s Riteway grocery and two beer parlors.
Guests at the Des Moines food show debated the type of glassware in the table displays. Some speculated champagne flutes or herb glasses, while a nearby table claimed the glassware could be used for either purpose. Across the stage, officials admitted the wine glasses were wine glasses.
Judge J P Gaffney approved the sale of the Johnson County Bank building and fixtures in Iowa City to Philip D Ketelsen, trustee for Iowa State Bank and Trust Co., for 127000 in district court.
The Jackson Township Farm Bureau will meet Friday evening October 18 at Livine Lake School with officer elections. The Living Lake P T A will serve a hot lunch and invites all residents to attend.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam arrested Don Radda on a warrant from Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee charging larceny of chickens. Preliminary hearing not yet held.
Rev. Vernon HH. Carter, president of the city ministerial association, will preach the union Thanksgiving service next month at the Presbyterian church. The association meets monthly at 1:30 PM at the Y M C A. The recent meeting welcomed Rev. B F Schwartz as a new attendee and named Dr F W Eastwood chair of a committee to arrange local observance of the 400th anniversary of a printing.
Police in Kewanee Illinois faced an eight hour riot in front of the Boss Manufacturing plant as six hundred strikers and sympathizers clashed with officers. One policeman was seriously injured and more than twelve others were beaten as the mob grew to about five thousand people demanding foremen be ejected. Wholesale arrests were promised.
Geneva report details step three of the league of nations plan to penalize Italy for the Ethiopian war as a boycott to cut exports and essential commodities. Paris dispatch notes Premier Laval asks Britain to withdraw home fleet ships from the Mediterranean to aid a peaceful settlement of the crisis.
Bruno Richard Hauptmann received a 30 day stay from the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals to pursue a U S Supreme Court appeal. The court earlier upheld his February conviction by a Hunterdon County jury at Flemington. The stay blocks transfer to the high court to permit de sentencing by Justice Thomas W. Trenchard.
Gerald Thompson, 26, convicted of murdering Mildred Hallmark, was executed in the electric chair with a prayer on his lips. About 500 witnesses watched behind a glass partition including John Hallmark, father of the slain girl. Thompson faced the chair after reading a letter from Lola Hughes.
Benjamin Tucker is in county hospital after his light truck crashed into a parked larger truck on South Iowa avenue. He suffered shock and head facial cuts with other bruises but injuries are not serious. his son who rode with him was uninjured. Report says glare from another car blinded him leading to the collision.
The final phase of surfacing on South Second Avenue began this morning making it the first in town to be finished. A heated asphalt layer, rock chips, and a heavy roller will seal the surface and make it ready for use in a few hours. Other streets in the south part of town await similar treatment as grading and rock deposits continue. Richard Horrabin said about 75 percent of the six and a half miles of street grading is complete.
Five more acts joined the finalists for the State theatre finals on Oct 23 after last night’s eliminations at the Y. Harold Ricks and Carol Benson, Living Lake school harmonica group, Eleanor Jane Tucker and Katherine Jean Atchison danced, George Masson with his mother accompanied, and the Leffler Davidson trio performed guitar, autoharp and song. The Living Lake and Leffler Davidson groups drew the night’s strongest applause from an audience over 400. Continued on page 24.

Project shows completion of a paving contract with rock surfacing applied to a large portion of streets in the southern part of town. The work indicates ongoing municipal improvements and a substantial portion of the street network completed.
A barn and its contents on the Cal Griggs farm three miles west of Lexington in Seventy Six township burned this morning. Loss includes new hay, a team and harness. Fire blamed on hayloft. appeared after discovery at about 10:30. Washington Farmers Mutual insured. a straw stack was saved. Washington fire company responded but the structure could not be saved.
Rev. W. J. Stevens of the Foursquare Gospel church announced no service at the tabernacle on South Marion Avenue this evening.
A large crowd is expected Wednesday in Central Park for a woodchopping contest sponsored by Peters' Hardware. The champion McLaren will wield a Plumb axe and others may use any axe except that. The event aims to attract broad interest.
A historical account of Pleasant Hill Church of Christ near Washington Iowa notes its 100th founding anniversary next year. The piece recounts early logs and the Moore family home used for worship from 1828 1836 and Absalom Leeper’s gospel visit as the first preacher in the region.
Washington Federal Savings And Loan reports a strong July to date with shareholder accounts up over 29000 and more than thirty first mortgage loans on Washington dwelling property. The agency notes loan amounts under 1000 each to broaden ownership, with typical payments of 11.40 monthly for ten years and 4 percent annual dividends to shareholders.
Walter E. Holsteen district Townsend organizer met in Washington and arranged a Townsend meeting for Thursday October 17 at eight o clock in the county courthouse. Frank L. Collins of Burlington will speak at the event which invites the public and especially young people. The Burlington club is the largest in the state with 1 574 members and the local group has 86 members toward a charter requiring 100.
Reports from London correspondents say a major clash is underway in the Webbe river valley between Italian Somaliland forces and Ethiopian troops. A European engineering party in the Ogaden area told a correspondent that 18 000 Ethiopians may have been killed.
Several nurses from here attend the state Nurses Association convention in Davenport. Miss Laura Einspahr goes this afternoon, and tomorrow Miss Ruth Ballard drives with Miss Dessa Shaw, Miss Francis Minick, and Miss Hattie McConnell. Mae Mangold, a Mercy Hospital graduate, drives in to attend and plans to take the state board exam in Des Moines soon. Meetings are at Hotel Blackhawk today and tomorrow.
The Washington city council set October 31 at 7 30 p m as the bid opening time for a northwest sewer system project including an intercepting sewer and pumping station. Plans and specs are in the city clerk's office for public examination. federal funds will cover part of the cost after approval.
