The government invited closed state national and mutual banks to borrow extra funds from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to pay depositors up to fifty percent. Receivers and conservators would pledge remaining assets as collateral and loans would be repaid as collateral is liquidated.
The YWCA Ways and Means Committee chaired by Mrs George C Stewart plans a rummage sale on Saturday October 21 in the room north of the Washington National Bank. Proceeds will buy shoes for needy children, with a welfare committee led by Mrs Sherman verifying applicants. Donations of clothing shoes books furniture and other items may be brought to the V W room tomorrow or to the North Iowa Avenue room Friday afternoon.
Wendall Wade of Cedar Rapids presented an organ and piano concert at Washington Methodist church last evening. Local resident Wade showcased his strong musical skill as Marjorie Smith gave a reading. The program, sponsored by the Methodist Epworth League, drew praise from attendees.
Oklahoma City report says state road contractor and political leader Charles Beekman faced a $10,000 extortion demand but the plot collapsed. Beekman agreed to place the money as officers monitored the scene after days of threats.
Funeral services for W T Trotter longtime Ainsworth resident and former mayor will be held Tuesday at 2 PM in the Ainsworth Methodist Church with Rev J H Krenmyre of Montezuma officiating. Burial will follow in Ainsworth cemetery. Trotter died Saturday after a period of declining health. He served as postmaster, school board member, Sunday school superintendent, Masonic lodge master, and was active in the Eastern Star. He moved to Ainsworth in 1877 and ran a blacksmith shop for 42 years before later selling insurance. He was born June 18 1860 in Talleyrand, and survived by a large family. An Iowa alumni gathering and organizational meeting for Washington County alumni is planned for Wednesday evening at the Congress Hotel dining room with a 6:30 dinner and program to follow.
Mr and Mrs Bernard Walker of Ainsworth JT 3 welcomed a baby girl yesterday morning at Washington County Hospital. The birth adds new family joy to the community.
Four months after the National Recovery Act was signed by President Roosevelt, the recovery program has cost the federal treasury about three quarters of a billion dollars. Over two million men have been employed, farmers received more than $100 million, civil conservation camps paid out over 40 million to rural families, and bank deposits are being unlocked to aid depositors.
Government salt pork distribution began today in the county and will run until the October supply of 3900 pounds is issued. Stored at the Breitenbach storehouse near the Washington National Bank, packages are prepared by H. I. Anderson and Mrs. Miller under the county emergency relief committee. Distribution aims to finish by week’s end with packets based on one and three quarters pounds per person.

DES MOINES October 16 Iowa spent 542000 for poor relief in September up 16000 from August. Chairman Mulock said higher food prices and season driven needs like clothing and fuel boosted costs. Direct relief totaled 255788 and work relief 258316 with the rest for transients and administration. families aided rose to 26516 from 24094.
Five violent deaths across three communities marked Iowa’s weekend toll. The events include a Sioux City automobile crash killing Mrs. Kraft and her infant, a Spencer area car wreck killing Leonard Johns, and a Cresco farm shooting where Rossman died from gunshot wounds. An inquest was planned in Cresco.
