Laverne Woods, 19, of Colfax is hospitalized in Skiff with a serious right leg wound from a hunting accident. The gun caught on his belt and discharged, fracturing the bone below the knee.
A congratulatory message honored St Pauls Evangelical Lutheran church in Dubuque for its sixty year anniversary. The 1865 founded congregation has had 12 pastors, currently led by Rev Mart A Kussert.
More than 100 students from Southeastern Iowa churches and schools gathered at William Penn college for a Youth Facing Conscription conference. The mock trial of a conscientious objector explored issues faced by registrants, with participants including Quakers and others, though officials stressed the event was to examine problems faced by those who register rather than oppose conscription.
Paul Engle, lecturer at the University of Iowa and noted poet, received the Johnson Brigham plaque as Iowa author of an outstanding literary work published in book form during the prior year. Lydia Margaret Barrette of Mason City presented the award at the Iowa Library Association convention. Engle’s winning volume, Corn, reflects his return to Iowa after years in Europe.
DES MOINES George Cason Dixon Ir won first in the heavy class of the Iowa Trail Ride and received a trophy for best horsemanship. Two dozen tired riders finished a 190 mile three day jaunt at the state fairgrounds, showing proper selection and conditioning of riding horses and care during and after long rides.
Cedar Rapids reports a student council led by Ben Jump begins a five day program of freshman annoyance at Coe College. Freshmen sign slips carried by seniors and a senior led name tally precede a Friday push ball contest to climax the events.
Rex Heresford of Iowa State College says when cheap rough feed is available, invest in plain grade steers cows and heifers. Common 500 to 750 pound stock can be bought in fall, fed roughage, finished with corn in spring. Market peak typically from April to early June.
A Des Moines reader reports a 184 year old London bank worker named Joan Swan describes London bombing raids four to five times daily and ongoing night attacks. She notes damage to the Bank of London but says it is not of military consequence and mentions a new work arrangement to cope with the strain.
A weekend toll in Iowa from violence includes a drowning of Leo Tayek 23 of Monona a stabbing death of Milford Miller 36 near Arcadia and Fairfield dean a fatal car crash killing Mauve Kohl 13 of Martelle an elderly man Levi Robert 68 of Mason City struck by a train and two farm accidents.
The air show at Washington airport will occur next Sunday Oct 20 with about 25 airplanes competing for trophies. Events include light plane races at 60 to 100 feet, bombing and spot landing contests, stunts by Jack and Virginia Snodgrass, and a remote controlled plane using radio control. Admission is 50 cents with free entry for children under five. Proceeds go to the Chamber of Commerce to cover Festicorn expenses. Improvements include road paving, crushed rock chips, and plans for electric lights and a field telephone enabling night flying.
Grinnell college authorities plan groundbreaking for a new fieldhouse to accompany the inauguration of Dr SN Stevens as president on Oct. 24. The facility would adjoin the current men’s gymnasium and measure about 160 by 70 feet with cost awaiting final architect plans.

An aeronautics inspector is en route from Kansas City to audit records and field setups for the junior college course.

Governor Harold E. Stassen today appointed Joseph H Ball a St. Paul newspaper man to fill the unexpired term of the late Senator Ernest Lundeen. Ball, 34, is a political writer for the St. Paul Pioneer Press and Dispatch. Lundeen was killed in an airplane crash at Lovettsville Virginia on August 31.

More than 35 bureaus and collection agencies attend as Des Moines bureau officials explain operations. Mr and Mrs Phil Antonoff depart for Minneapolis after death of his sister earlier today.

Washington county residents aged 21 to 35 must register on Wednesday as required by a new federal conscription law. They must appear at their precinct polling places, answer questions for the draft board, with penalties of up to five years in prison or a $10,000 fine for noncompliance. Registration opens at seven and closes at nine.
At about 8 15 p m yesterday Yves Edmund Sanders of Washington struck a calf on a road in Seventy Six township killing the animal and damaging his car estimated at 50 to 75 dollars. No one was injured.

Nevada Iowa Oct 14 C W Morris 37 former foreman for the Ames street department was sentenced to not more than 15 years in state prison after pleading guilty to uttering a forged instrument. He obtained 4917 dollars in four years by signing fictitious names to the street department payroll.
Fernley Nolte and Gertrude Eichen of Algona Iowa receive a license. Donald F Hoskins of Montezuma Iowa and Erna Mapel of Brighton Iowa also granted a license.
Des Moines reports plans to register 375000 men aged 21 through 36 at local polling places on Wednesday. One hundred nineteen draft boards study regulations to guide selection as Governor Wilson prepares to announce a state selective service director, possibly Adjutant General Charles Grahl or a civilian appointee.
Sherman P Norton aged 65 of Brighton died this morning by hanging after a period of ill health and financial worries. His body was found in an outside toilet by family members. The coroner deemed no inquest necessary. Funeral arrangements are pending with Hoskins funeral home. burial in Green Mound cemetery near Merrimac. He leaves his wife Blanche Esielman and seven children.
In Knoxville Iowa jury selection began today for the murder trial of Matt Melia a 44 year old Attica farmer accused of shooting his brother and sister in law on July 30 and dumping their bodies in a well on a farm
Wendell L. Willkie warned aboard the Willkie train to Syracuse that President Roosevelt could provoke war with a reckless statement. He said he prayed the United States would not become involved in another war and that the nation was unprepared.
Andy Blattner recalled his long acquaintance with Jacob Hotle by recounting his acts at both funerals. He shoveled snow to clear the way for the sled bearing Hotle’s father to the cemetery sixty years ago and served as pallbearer at Hotle’s recent funeral after attending his marriage in 1880.
