Mrs. Lydia Holst has filed a $2,000 suit in Council Bluffs against Jens M. Nielsen claiming a house he sold last year was infested with termites. She says the damage to flooring and joists was concealed at the time of purchase.
Webster City report says O. L. Clare returned to his old address with groceries. After knocking he realized he had moved days earlier, leaving him embarrassed by the mistaken visit to his former home.
Maria Roberts, chairwoman of the student loan fund, and Dr Raymond M. Hughes, president emeritus of Iowa State College, were honored as two dormitories were named for them. New Hall will be called Roberts Hall, while the men’s dormitory will be Hughes Hall.
Hancock county grand jury exonerated the case of Frank Weider, 54, in the slaying of Bert Anfinson, 47, Corwith beer tavern operator found May 21 with head crushed on railroad tracks. Weider still faces a charge of arson at Corwith.
Cedar Falls Alumni from Town State Teachers college converge for the eighteenth annual homecoming three day program. Alumni director A C Fuller predicts a record attendance as fraternities and sororities plan informal gatherings over the weekend.
Roscoe D. Dunlap an Davenport electrician spent six months assembling a basement frontier cabin to display his relic collection. The rustic room features oak log walls clay chinking and a slab ceiling. Highlights include antique rifles an oxen yoke 500 Indian arrowheads and a German spinning wheel. Also shown are a 1825 Ephraim Downs clock prewar newspapers a cowhide trunk and a 1906 Moline auto.
Clinton stock breeder John Mommeen Miles, holder of the world canrot cattle title, plans to ship five carloads of Angus baby beeves to the 1937 International Livestock Show in Chicago. Twenty-five head will be culled next week, leaving 95 for shipment, with entries: two loads in the light class under 1050 pounds, two in the medium 1069 to 1100 pounds, and one in the heavy division above 1300 pounds.

President Roosevelt announced a mediation effort to resolve Chinese Japanese differences and end the undeclared war through the nine power treaty signatories. He noted the United States has not yet received an official invitation and declined to discuss potential neutrality legislation at the upcoming extra session.
Sheriff records indicate in the first nine months eight persons were arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Six were convicted and two cases are pending. Six were arrested for reckless driving with five convictions and one acquittal. Eight additional highway violations all resulted in convictions. Some arrests occurred before justices of the peace and mayors in Washington and other county towns. Sheriff Putnam notes most pleaded guilty and faced punishment.
Valencia reports a loyalist air armada attacked Garapipillos rebel air field in Saragossa province. An official communique says a squadron of over 100 planes raided the field, destroying more than 70 rebel aircraft and damaging the rest.
Adjutant 8 W Kaster of Leon Beatty post American Legion said with 60 members signed up the post is 2 percent below the Oct 18 quota ahead of the district Legion conference at Keokuk. A weekend push is planned. Members urged to contact the adjutant or membership committee.
Anthony Kennehan a former locomotive engineer on the Rock Island line died at Excelsior Springs Missouri last Sunday aged 73 He lived in Washington for years and retired two years ago His body was sent to Crookston Minnesota for burial with no local services He had nieces and nephews in Minnesota and was connected with Mrs R L McGugin on East Main Street He was a former member of the Washington council Knights of Columbus
County Agent W J Roudabush reports two corn fields under review for a county husking contest site. A turnout of at least eight signups is needed. Dwight Hote, county record holder, Virgil and Ralph Krantz are entrants, with the winner possibly advancing to the state contest near Oskaloosa on November 2. Washington county contest likely in week of October 25.
Brighton Oct 15 Cal Stevens 81 longtime resident was found dead in bed at his farm north of town. Officials say heart attack likely. A railroad man 24 years, he later lived on the farm. Survived by Nettie Mae, two daughters Mia Vida Walch and Lulu Edwards, three sisters Lida Bales Emma Leppert and Dave Lemmon. Funeral plans are pending.
Snow fell today in parts of Iowa catching forecasters by surprise. The heaviest accumulation in Des Moines area near Weather Man Charles D. Reed. Indianola reported ground cover as rain forecast shifted to snow in some places.
Vatican officials deny a U S report claiming the Roman Catholic church favored Japan's military actions in China. Monsignor Constantini calls the story untrue and says the Holy See has not issued any statement on the Japanese invasion.
Miss Lucille Reed suffers a throat infection and is replaced by Mrs. Bob Lytle at Blanche's Beauty Nook. Reed remains resting at the O. B&B, Schmitt home.
Ninety percent of Washington county taxes for 1937 have been paid, with nine month receipts totaling $653,630. Payments to date amount to $653,605.20 leaving an unpaid balance of $74,620. Delinquent year payments and September receipts are detailed, including homestead refunds of $73,568.44 and various fund allocations across general, county, school, and road accounts.
William Opie of Dayton Ohio captain of the Crusaders organization and noted orator will preach at the Foursquare Gospel church Sunday morning and evening. Opie oversees crusade work in thirteen Great Lakes states and spoke at the Foursquare convention eastern district Terra Haute Indiana.
Community members can donate to aid China via the Red Cross or other committees as authorized by R S Sherman county chairman. The Journal notes a 45 hour old cable from China urging humanitarian aid and cites Rotary and Y’s Men efforts to fund relief in Shanghai and other war affected areas. Contributions may be given at banks the Journal or to Roger S Sherman.
A 1938 Farm Bureau program planning session will be held at the county agent's office next Monday evening. Attendees include Bureau representatives and leaders from several organizations such as the county board of supervisors health unit welfare department soil conservation committee the ministerial association and others. President W E Frame heads a four member committee including Wade Gardner W E Smith Boyd Dill and John Kaotek.
Five cartons of cigarettes were reported stolen yesterday afternoon from the tavern on North Iowa Avenue formerly run by Joe Simmering who was refused a license for the new year by the city council. Entry was gained through a broken rear window. A group of boys seen near the scene. police notified shortly after the burglary. City Marshal Jay Brown and officers investigated.
Frank Formanek of Garner, 69, died at home from injuries after his automobile was struck by a hit and run truck near Hayfield. The fatality total for Iowa this year climbs to 402.

Another hard freeze swept the area last night, with the low holding at 22 degrees for a second night in a row. Daytime high yesterday reached 16 degrees.
Arthur Anderson of Washington was found not guilty by a Keokuk county jury after seven hours of deliberation. He was arrested July 2 in Wellman and jailed in Keokuk county until his release. State prosecutors Ralph Goeldner and Robert J. Shaw led the case with defense attorney L. J. Kehoe of Washington.
