The Mohegan liner, carrying 53 passengers and over 100 crew, was beset by a strong gale and likely engine failure. Lifesaving efforts at Liscard Stanthony lights and Port Houscock recovered 45 survivors and five dead. 14 crew members were found alive on rocks.
Reported turmoil in Virden Ills as paramilitary guards handle a stockade siege. A wounded guard train evacuation to St Louis followed by new warrants, tightened gate controls, and troop movements. In Springfield local authorities moved 106 negroes to safety, escorted by police and veterans, toward St Louis amid funeral processions and renewed fear.
Colonel Turner defends delaying service of war rants against President Loucks General Manager Lukins and others accused of conspiracy to murder and murder. Turner cites public calm and safety concerns and says no guards will leave the stockade until the matter is resolved. He notes the issue has been referred to Springfield for action.
President McKinley’s arrival in St Louis on October 15 drew an almost continuous ovation from 9:15 a.m. to 11 p.m. He was escorted to the Southern Hotel by civic groups and troops, with two El Caney veterans among the honorary guards, as crowds lined streets cheering throughout his stay.
