OGO satellite launches from Vandenberg into polar orbit

UPI reports a polar orbit launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base carrying an OGO satellite with 20 experiments including a Van Allen radiation detector built by the University of Iowa. The craft aimed for 300 to 970 miles high but reached higher due to ground guidance failure. backup systems adjusted the mission.

More Troops Sought For Viet Nam Readiness

Washington reports the reserve component will supply 119000 National Guard and 31000 Army Reserve troops for 15,000 infantry and six 4000 brigades. Training rises to 72 drills yearly as units upgrade to full strength, with readiness to deploy within eight weeks if activated. McNamara aims for possible use by next June.

Vinton school to end teenage dances in gym

Waterloo Man Faces Charge of Bigamy

Waterloo Iowa United Press International report says Jack Crawford 38 a Waterloo wrestling referee was bound over to district court on a bigamy charge. Prosecutors say Crawford cohabitated with two wives in Black Hawk County and married Dorothy in Missouri in 1953 producing four children. Their latest child was born last July. He also allegedly married Linda Tovar 28 in Preston Minnesota in June 1964 and she had a child last July. Crawford's second wife was divorced from David Tover and had three children.

Shortage of town funds prompts light department probe

IMOGENE Iowa UPI A cash shortage totaling 3804 dollars in Light Department funds was found during a state audit. Mayor Tony Maher warned the discrepancy could threaten the town post office, while Postmaster S W Jones who was clerk during the shortage pleaded guilty to embezzlement.

Final figures from the University of Iowa show a record 16,355 students enrolled, up 13 percent from last year and nearly double the enrollment a decade ago, as reported by UPI in Iowa City.

President Johnson’s slower than expected recovery update

Washington reports President Johnson remains weaker than anticipated after gall bladder and kidney stone surgery but continues to show gradual strength gains. Press secretary Moyers notes restlessness and fatigue, with doctors saying recovery is progressing though slower than expected. Iowa Weather: Partly Cloudy with Showers Ending East

United Press International reports Iowa will see Friday partly cloudy conditions with showers ending in the east and cooler air in the west. Tonight's low expected 35 to 40 with northwest to southeast extremes near 50. Friday highs range from the 60s in the west to lower 70s in the far east. Saturday outlook predicts considerable cloudiness with showers or thundershowers.

Jr Hi Y Donates To World Service At YMCA Carnival

The Jr Hi Y club of the Washington YMCA donates 30 to the World Service goal and hosts a Jr High dance 730 to 930 p m. Tickets cost two five cent tokens with no memberships required. The booth will be among fourteen run by about 125 YMCA boys, open 6 to 9 p m. Proceeds support overseas YMCA World Service programs in countries like Ceylon Jordan UAR Korea and others as part of the 1965 campaign totaling 2 512 440.

Frenchmen win Nobel medicine prize in 1965

Farm bill price tag criticized by Shuman in Iowa remarks

Shuman, president of the American Farm Bureau, told Linn County Farm Bureau that the Johnson administration farm program carries a price tag above 18 billion dollars and warned the issue remains unsettled beyond the current 1969 expiration.
