William Holt, 74, died in a south Clarinda blaze that engulfed his home Thursday night. His son Russell, in a nearby house, saw the inferno as the structure burned for several minutes before responders found Holt’s body at the doorway. It was the fourth major fire near Clarinda during Fire Prevention week.
A three man coroner's jury in Webster City returned an accidental death verdict for Mrs. Jessie J. Riles 21 who died from injuries received Friday after being struck on Highway 60 near the south edge of town. Wayne Cramer of Kamrar was exonerated after testimony he ran over the body as it lay along the road following a fainting spell.
Darrel Wayne Wierson, 1 year old son of Mr. and Mrs Otis CG Wierson, was found dead in a water storage tank at the family farm 14 miles east of Kioland. He was rushed to Roland where artificial respiration failed.
Five Rock Island freight cars derailed near the Union depot in Cedar Rapids late Friday afternoon. Officials say a brake beam likely dropped caused the incident and damage estimates could not be determined immediately.
Frank Grounds 71 of Greenfield dies after a midnight head on collision on Highway 2 west of town. George Musmaker Jr. 36 and Paul R. Smith of Des Moines suffer serious injuries. Grounds is thought to have had a heart attack before the crash.

Mrs. C. P. McCormick mother of Eugene McCormick assistant athletic coach at Washington High School died last night after an illness of several weeks. Funeral arrangements were not announced.
The Journal publishes a corrected roster of Washington county armed forces personnel. It adds 12 new entries and reassigns one, bringing totals to 31 dead 9 missing and 10 prisoners of war, with names listed including Harold Wehr Willis Schwartz James Mitchell and Lewis McFadden among others.
Albert J. McKean 81 of Columbus Junction died today at Bellevue hospital Muscatine after a lifetime in the area. Born locally he married Jessie McChrystal in 1892. she died this year. He ran a farm and later a Columbus Junction shoe shop. Survived by two sons Rollo Conesville Earl Muscatine and three brothers Ed William Bert. Richie funeral home handles arrangements.

Wilson has been free on $10 000 bond awaiting retrial after a long life sentence.

Erwen Seiwert of Sigourney, 31, was ordered held to the grand jury under $500 bonds on a charge of passing false checks. He is jailed. The state law allows a year in prison after a third conviction.
