Iowa Odd Fellows Gather for Grand Lodge Sessions

D. D. Monroe of Clayton New Mexico will address a public meeting at the Scottish Rite temple in Des Moines as part of the ninety seventh annual Iowa grand lodge session. The event includes the grand encampment and Rebekah assembly with headquarters at Hotel Kirkwood and meetings at 1.0.C.F. hall and the temple. More than 1 000 are expected to attend the gatherings beginning today and running through Friday.

Grandfather Joins the Navy in Des Moines

A 44 year old, Thomas J. Prebo of Bloomfield, Iowa, was sworn in as a seaman first class in Des Moines. He joins three of his sons who are already serving in the Navy in the Pacific theater.

Youth Severely Injured In Estherville Collision

Jimmie Hutchinson 16 son of Mr and Mrs Frank Hutchinson northwest of Estherville sustained severe injuries in a late Saturday collision between his motorcycle and the car of Emmet county farmer John Questad. He suffered a fractured right leg and crushed ankle and was treated at Park View hospital.

Frozen Meat Research at Iowa State College

Iowa State College researchers begin a two year study on frozen meat to compare defrosting and cooking methods. The project led by Prof. Belle Lowe assesses beef veal and pork using tests on appearance shrinkage servings palatability tenderness and fuel use to judge best thaw and cook methods funded by the National Livestock and Meat Board and conducted by multiple college departments.

Judge Bechly Grants Divorce in Dettwiler Case

Judge Frank Beehly of Montezuma presided in Washington today and said the September term work would wrap tomorrow. Dora L. Dettwiler was granted a divorce from Harry F. Dettwiler with custody of two minor children and ordered support and alimony. Judge Patterson of Osceola will open a term in November.

Mrs Harold James Dies at Washington County Hospital

Mrs Harold James of Williamsburg, 37, died yesterday at Washington County Hospital after a surgical admission on Monday and a second operation on Saturday evening. She was sister-in-law of Mrs J M Lloyd.

County War Fund short of quota despite town overages

Washington county despite town total above goal remains about $4,000 short of the county quota of 16 654. Rural districts yet to report contribute most of the remaining funds as eleven solicitors and three towns have not completed reporting. City totals exceed targets with G E Mace at 183 50 and G W Easter 161 50, while rural canvassers deliver nearly 1 000 more in a single day.

Mrs Bjork Dies A Swedish born longtime Washington County resident

Matilda Bjork a Sweden native who lived on a farm southeast of town in Havre community for 49 years died Saturday afternoon after long illness. Born Matilda Johnson in Sweden on September 6 1864 she immigrated to the United States at age seven. She married Oscar Bjork in 1895 at Alexis Illinois and the couple later settled in the Havre area. Surviving are her husband Arthur of Pleasant Plain and daughter Mrs Henry Kiene of Crawfordsville. Funeral services set for two oclock Tuesday at L A Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Divorce Granted to Mrs Mary H Patterson at Fairfield

A decree of divorce was granted to Mrs Mary Helena Patterson in her suit against Homer Edward Patterson by Judge Harold V Levis in Jefferson county court at Fairfield. The family lived on a farm near Pleasant Plain and she has moved to Washington. Mrs Patterson was awarded custody of two minor children, the household goods, and support money.

Lt George A McCaleb 26 a liaison pilot from Ainsworth Iowa is convalescing at a U S Army General Hospital in England after 23 days of fighting in Normandy. He has the Air Medal for 50 combat hours in France and will receive the Purple Heart. He reports rapid improvement and high morale while under care of Lt Col Clement Fogerty and staff.
