Des Moines reports state liquor stores will close 24 hours after the European war ending is announced. Governor Goy Hickenlooper said a conference with the liquor control commission led to the plan. The Iowa Anti Saloon League urged 72 hour closure and beer taverns may also shut.
Des Moines reports state tax commission figures show Iowa will assess property at 3,054,241,096 dollars next year. Property is assessed at 60 percent of actual value, yielding an overall real estate value exceeding five billion dollars as the basis for tax collections.
PELLA The Iowa Baptist convention closed its eight day session in Central College chapel drawing 400 delegates and nine workers. Officers elected: President Murotdit from Marshalltown re elected. Vice President Rev John R Estes Okuniwa. Secretary Rev K F Partridge Chariton. Treasurer J H Cochrane Des Moines in his twenty sixth year. Next year’s meeting will be in Marshalltown.
Des Moines Iowa duck hunters may gain a later season in 1945 as Bruce Stiles head of the Iowa conservation commission says the state could place the season in the intermediate zone instead of the northern zone He told the Izaak Walton league convention that the intermediate dates would run from October 14 to January 1 while northern zone dates are September 20 to December 1 and some hunters complain the early dates miss migrating ducks.
Police in Ames warned Thursday to watch for a burglar who robbed three Iowa State College fraternity houses. The thief stole $331 and investigators believed he might visit other fraternity houses in Ames and Iowa City.
Senator Guy M. Gillette of Cherokee addressed about 100 people at a luncheon in Muscatine. He urged that continued use of farm surpluses could create a middle west industrial empire and cited the local industrial alcohol plant as proof, predicting the industry would persist after the war.
Des Moines report shows September seasonal rise in cattle entering corn belt feed fats, with Iowa and Nebraska leading gains. Iowa farmers bought 200,267 cattle in September up from 196,400 a year earlier, contributing to totals since July.
President Roosevelt writes to War Production Board Chairman J A Krug urging higher farm machinery output. He warns a fully employed America will consume more food, and domestic farming must stay at high levels to meet wartime and postwar needs including UNRRA aid and exports. He calls for modernizing and maintaining farm equipment.
A southeastern Iowa district meeting of the National Farm Loan association was held yesterday in Iowa City with about 60 attendees including George D. Umphrey secretary treasurer and Frank Anderson president of the Washington county National Farm Loan association. The group discussed paying dividends to stockholders and heard talks from EH N. Van Rorne president of the Federal Land Bank of Omaha Nile Kin nick and several regional and local loan managers.
The report notes numbers 1 to 381,832 and 2951 and 404 in the 1948 period. It states fewer sheep and lambs were fed into loss than last year, with Iowa’s September figure at 288,500 versus 70,859 a year earlier.

Funeral services for Pere RB Utterback former president of the Ainsworth community will be held at 1 80 Saturday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home. Burial will be in the Ainsworth cemetery. He was born May 9 1876 southwest of Ainsworth and lived in Oskaloosa the last seven years working at Grover Neiswater restaurant. He belonged to the Masons at Ainsworth and Elks at Oskaloosa. He was a Pullman conductor and dining car steward on Illinois Central and Union Pacific railroads for years. He had been Elks secretary at Champaign Illinois for 13 years. He died in Tucson Arizona at St Jude's hospital two weeks after falling ill.
United Press reports a large carrier air raid on Formosa damaged 35 Japanese ships and 221 planes were destroyed. Tokyo says the battle of East Asia is raging off Formosa with ongoing raids on Kyushu, Ryukus, and other targets as Marines seize Peleliu and Anguar pockets shrink.
Mr and Mrs F Glenn Schwartz of five miles northwest of Washington report a telegram from the war department saying their son Private Willis R Schwartz is missing in action since September 22. He served in the infantry overseas for two months or more after arriving in England and France, with a letter dated September 15 received September 25. He was inducted at Des Moines on May 22, 1942.
An AP report from Cairo states Greek patriots have liberated Athens ending 42 months of Nazi occupation. The Greek army abandoned Athens and the nearby port of Piraeus and retreated northward under heavy air attack as Allied forces move toward occupation of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean islands.
The obituary notes the death of Mr. Utterback's wife on January 4 of the current year and lists his surviving sister Mrs. J. G. Love of Medford Oregon.
British eighth army forces broke the German Adriatic flank on a broad front near Bologna as American fifth army troops pressed to breach Nazi hill defenses south of the city. The drive pushed ground gains along Rimini to Bologna highway and captured Montiano and nearby villages.
The Washington council of the Knights of Columbus marked Columbus Day and the council's 25th anniversary. Nearly all active members attended the event with about half of the 39 charter members present. Rev. H. J. Corcoran opened with prayer and the gathering included a history talk by J. M. Supreme Headquarters reports American infantry broke from Forst Aachen toward Aachen proper advancing several blocks under heavy German fire. Tanks massed northeast of Aachen as U S forces endured light casualties and pressed a dawn assault with mortars, artillery, and tank destroyers targeting German positions in the city.
