Alerting and Warning Exercise Across 700 Counties
Washington County Civil Defense personnel will take part in an alerting and warning exercise on October 14 to test the National Warning System across 700 counties in ten states. Initiated by NORAD, counties will report how long to relay alarms to all areas. No sirens will be sounded. Washington (UPI) President Ford signed a 1.5 billion Health Professions Education Assistance Act to boost rural and inner city doctor supply and provide student loan guarantees and a loan insurance fund through 1978. Des Moines (UPI) A Des Moines man faces open murder charges after a shooting at the Kirkwood Hotel early today. Duane Bryan, 29, was arrested at his home following the gunfire that killed the unidentified victim, who died at Iowa Methodist Hospital.

Bond issues approved in Iowa towns for hospital and school
United Press International reports voters in two Iowa communities approved bond issues Tuesday. Dyersville voters backed a $500,000 bond to refinance the hospital by 78 percent. In the Tri-Center Community School District, a $1.49 million bond for a new elementary school and facility renovations won 61 percent. Both passed with the required 60 percent threshold under state law.

Fagen murder trial delayed to late fall in Sigourney
The murder trial of 19 year old David Alan Fagen is delayed from October 19 in Keokuk County District Court Sigourney to late November or early December. Assistant Iowa Attorney General Joseph Beck said the delay follows a stipulation agreed by both sides. Fagen is charged with killing Keota Night Marshal Douglas Bell whose body was found June 11 along Highway 77 south of Keota. The trial remains in Sigourney as no venue change motion has been filed yet.
