A Des Moines column reports that large quantities of unrationed stove and lamp naphtha are being sold to Iowa motorists in violation of OPA rules. OPA officials call the issue their biggest headache since rationing began and have ordered an investigation into misuse by both consumers and dealers.
DES MOINES A special hearing on the threatened abandonment of the hemp industry in Ilora will be at Eldora next Tuesday by a special senate sub committee. Senator Gillette, committee chairman, said the subcommittee was formed to study uses for farm and forest crops and fears foreign cartel groups may push America out of the rubber and jute field after the war. Attending are Dr. Ki Buchanan, Dr. C W Sweeney, Dr. W H Fuller of Iowa State College, Ames, F E Butcher, president of Was Heip Industries, Inc., and local farmers.
Cedar Rapids Dr Charles A Anderson resigns as president of Coe College effective November 15 after serving since 1942. Board yet to name a successor. Anderson plans to move to a position likely outside Cedar Rapids. He succeeded Dr Harry Morehouse Gage who left in 1942 to Lindenwood College.
DES MOINES The state health department blood bank is nearly depleted due to demand from the Brayton typhoid outbreak and a Missouri Valley train wreck. No normal serum has been sent out since Oct. only thirteen bottles will be ready by week’s end though Davenport hospitals have orders for 24 bottles. The bank has held as many as 100 bottles.
AVOCA Des Moines resident Leslie Ballou 45 pleaded guilty before District Judge Verne Johnson to driving a Iowa liquor commission truck while intoxicated. He was fined 3800 after a Aug 22 arrest when the truck jackknifed near Oakland blocking traffic en route to Des Moines with a wine shipment from Council Bluffs. Ballou had been indicted by a grand jury last week. the liquor commission said it had discharged him.
Des Moines reports September egg production in Iowa reached a record 252 million eggs, up from 242 million a year ago and 219 million in 1942. Leslie M. Carl of the crop and livestock reporting service notes the rise reflects increased output across the state's flocks.
Soviet dispatches report rapid Red Army advances converging on Budapest after Szeged fall as 100,000 Germans are pinned near the coast and Transylvania towns are liberated. Hungarian resistance crumbles and eastern front gains threaten Hungary's capital.
Mrs Maud Hickman of C ville vice chairman of the district will be guest speaker at a Washi County Women's Republican meeting Monday at 2 30 PM in the Y Community room. Women of the community invited. guests from Johnson Jefferson Henry and Louisa counties expected. Accompanying Mrs Hickman is Mrs Lloyd Thurston of Indianola president of the fourth district club. A social hour and tea will follow.

Eardley Bell Jr. marks his centennial birthday today in Iowa county near Wellman. He has lived in the area for many years and has been seriously ill the past week with his condition unchanged. His daughter Mrs Amy Glass notes the celebration amid local records.
Des Moines reports looming coal and fuel oil shortages next winter though coal is not rationed yet. State mine inspectors urge farmers to secure half of winter fuel now while OPA warns civilian fuel oil demand will rise for war needs and Pacific theater supply lines. Wood remains plentiful in Iowa despite shortages elsewhere.
A Vancouver Washington resident arrived Sunday and, though very weak, was able to recognize his family. Eardley Bell Jr an attorney in Wellman is a son.
The revenue office at the post office will be closed all day Saturday. Deputy collector John J. Mattes announced the temporary closure.
United Press reports 1000 American planes attacked Formosa in the largest Pacific air fleet yet, targeting the railway system as bombers hit East Indies oil and southern Palau islands. Tokyo says eight hours of raids began at 7 a m with 100 planes shot down in six hours. Admiral Nimitz said a task force hit the Ryukyus as carriers remain near Formosa and no allied confirmation on a Formosa move.
Last night dropped to 0 degrees, two below freezing, with widespread frost noted by early risers. Despite the freezing temperatures, crops suffered little damage, as the frost was followed by a bright Indian summer day with strong sun and warming temperatures.

Harvesting 600 acres of hemp in Washington County has started using five reapers from Trace hemp mill. Walter Oetjen leads the program with Johansen decorticator under his supervision, aiming to complete processing in about six months.
